Long exposure black and white photograph of offshore rocks, surf, and fog at the Point Lobos State Reserve, California

This photograph is from last summer and a visit to Point Lobos when I decided to work with very long exposures in daylight muted by coastal fog. A set of these photographs has sat in my raw file collection since then, as I wasn’t quite sure how I wanted to render them in the post-processing stage. I used a 9-stop neutral density filter to darken the scene a great deal and permit the very long exposure that allowed the surf to blur and become diffused. However, these filters invariably have an effect on color balance that is not very lovely – they add a slight almost purple cast to the image. As I thought about them as color images, I could not find a color balance that worked – so I put them aside.

Last week, spurred by another rapidly filling hard drive, I began to go through more of my older raw files to see what could be deleted. Indeed, there were quite a few files that could go – duplicates, errors, some images that really will never live up to what I had expected them to be. But as I do every time I engage in this activity, I found several photographs that I had either overlooked originally or which needed to be processed in ways that I hadn’t thought about at the time. It occurred to me that this one might become one of my “minimalist seascape” photographs if I went for a high key interpretation in black and white.

I can’t say with certainly just where in San Francisco I photographed this building, though I think it may have been in the North Beach neighborhood. To me it seemed like a superficially very simply building that turns out to be a lot more complex, and a just plain interesting example of a lot of surprising juxtapositions of shape and color.

Everything initially seems almost boringly “square” – the shapes on the garage door, the sections of the sidewalk in front of the garage, the abrupt and jutting shape of the upper story extension that leans out over the front entrance and the garage, the odd little window at the upper left, and the two symmetrically placed bushes in front of the garage and the front door. But with a little bit closer look, certain things seem to be off just a bit. Someone must have faced a difficult decision when the bushes grew too tall – whether to chop off the top of the one on the right and maintain the symmetry, or to instead let that one drop, throwing off the even balance – and doesn’t the one on the left sort of seem like the unruly brother of the one on the right?

Sometimes the world just hands you things that you couldn’t come up with on your own if you tried.

The opportunities for bad puns are so tempting here, but I’ll struggle to resist, and instead simply offer a few words about the location and the, uh, scene. On this summer day I was wandering around San Francisco to do street photography, and walked up Grant Street. Grant is such a tourist place that I often instead head off to some nearby streets that are a bit less geared to the tourist trade, so I picked up a cross street and wandered up toward Stockton Street. At one point as I walked past a busy area of markets and other small businesses I happened to notice this odd (and perhaps unfortunate, if you are the bank) juxtaposition of sidewalk “decorations.”

In the right weather conditions you can find people engaged in a range of water sports along the California coast in locations like this one a few miles north of Santa Cruz (and not far south of San Francisco.) In addition to the classic and iconic surfers, there are windsurfers and, as in this photograph, kiteboarders or kit surfers. It is difficult to not stop and make a few photographs when I catch the sight of a line-up of colorful sails just off the shoreline.

On this July day, a group of people were “playing” not far from the shore, alternately heading straight out into the ocean, only to return close to the shoreline where they could do some wild airborne maneuvers by picking up speed and then flying off the tops of waves. This fellow seems to be going for speed as he made a traverse of the area just beyond the beach.
