Very late in the day, as the low sunlight hit the front of this rather plain brick church near the train station in down town San Jose head on, I walked past and noticed the very thick arch and old wooden doors, along with the bushes casting shadows on the front of the entry.

Steps, handrail, mailbox, door, and wall in a light industrial building in downtown San Jose, California.

I found this doorway on a side street in a light industrial area of downtown San Jose. I like the combination of all sorts of angles – perspective lines and the line of the handrail – and the contrast between the cold tone cement of the entry way and the warmly lighted interior of the building.

Weathered brick wall, pipes, stairway, and sidewalk in an old industrial area of San Jose, California.

I found this surprising scene along a loading dock in an older light industrial section of downtown San Jose. I’m always attracted to brick walls, but the wild color combination of the natural brick, the gaudy but weathered paint on the pipes, and the rusted metal of the stairway caught my attention. There are some other smaller and subtler details that probably are only visible in the print.

Old brick wall with arches, door, and windows in a building now used as a historical museum. This building is quite old, but inside this building is another older building that dates to the mid-1800s near the founding of the shipyard.
