In several ways, though not all, this was the best kind of winter day to photograph along the Big Sur coast. Recent storms had complicated access just enough to keep the crowds away. The lingering moisture softened the atmosphere and light. The surf was up. I stopped at a few of the usual places, but also found a few new overlooks. This is the second time I’ve been to this specific spot, and the conditions were different each time.

The scene is full of elements of a “typical” Big Sur coast photograph. Steep headlands running into the ocean? Check. Sea stacks just offshore? Check. The ever-present horizon? Check. Surf? Check. A bit of mist or fog? Check. Perhaps add a stop at the Big Sur Bakery along the way, and all of the pieces are in place!

Every time I visit the Big Sur coast — which I’ve been doing for decades — I manage to find something new. Sometimes it is just a different view on something that I’ve seen before — perhaps a different sort of light, unusual conditions of surf or weather, or a slightly different vantage point. Occasionally it is something that I did not know about — an obscure overlook, a juxtaposition of landscape elements, and so forth.

This location falls between those extremes. I have stopped to photograph this general area quite a few times. But there are innumerable little access points and foot paths that head out along the edge of the coastal bluffs, and this time I took one that I’ve seen many times but never followed. It took me to this overlook above a small cove backed by a series of small ridges running down to the waterline, with a taller hill in the distance.

“Autumn Creek” — A rocky creek beneath thinning autumn foliage in New Hampshire’s White Mountains.

This is a slightly different perspective on a scene that was also the focus of another photograph I shared in the past few weeks. Both focus on this quiet little New Hampshire creek, a place we came upon serendipitously, after taking a few random turns off of the main highway and driving up a gravel road into the forest. Both photographs — this one and the previous — include the same creek and were made from almost the same camera position. In this one I expanded the field of view a bit and raised the camera to include more of the fall leaves in the canopy.

I often urge folks who ask about the “secret places” they should know about when they visit a new location to instead recognize that in order to understand the place well enough to find those it will take time… and that it isn’t a bad idea to at least start with icons while you keep your eyes peeled for non-iconic spots that appeal to you. That was certainly our approach on this trip, on which we began by photographing in one of the most iconic — and crowded! — regions for New Hampshire fall color. After the first day and a half or so of that, we started to “poke around” a bit, heading up this or that little side road that we noticed and then setting off for more distant places whose names on maps caught our attention.

This evening marked the end of a 24 hour bout of pretty challenging backcountry weather during our August photography trip in the Eastern Sierra. We had no more set up our tents at our base camp when the skies unleashed hours of the heaviest rain I have ever experience in the Sierra backcountry. Later that evening it decreased enough that we could come out of our tents, recover some gear that had been left out in the deluge, fix dinner, and crawl back into our tents. We thought it was over, but very early in the morning it started again, though this time not nearly as heavy, and continued on into the next day. Finally, on the second evening, the weather started to break.

On this second evening we all headed out to find suitable photographic subjects. The clouds were slowly thinning, and the surrounding peaks starting to show through. Eventually we got a bit of last-minute sunset light that created utterly beautiful cloudscapes and colorful mountains. But first, I set up on top of a rocky outcropping and watched fog drift across this rocky slope, making the trees drift in and out of sight as the clouds washed back and forth.
