The story of our “holiday pandemic” visit to New York continues. In our previous episode we heard that after pondering the go-don’t-go question during a week when we carefully watched rising case reports, our decision was to go ahead and do a long-scheduled holiday visit to Manhattan to visit family, including some we had not seen in person in two years. We’re triple-vaccinated, we loaded up with N95 masks, we avoided most of the usual non-family New York attractions, so we were about as safe as we could be — not perfectly safe, since no one is, but generally fine.

Given the unusual circumstances of visiting Manhattan (and The Bronx) during a pandemic, our routines necessarily changed. Every morning began with a quick, masked trip to a downstairs bakery, where we retrieved coffee and pastry that we ate in our hotel room while waiting for the 15-minute rapid tests to complete. When we were not with family, our options for entertainment were somewhat limited, but we eventually worked out a rough walking loop that we followed a few times. It took us through some West Side neighborhoods between Broadway and Central Park, including the street where I photographed this fascinating metal stairway and gate.

The Sierra Nevada has many faces, and the east and west sides almost look like two different ranges. The west side is approached via the flat, agricultural Great Central Valley, and it begins with almost imperceptible hills that gradually rise to foothills, then to forested mountains, and many miles later finally culminate in high, rocky peaks and ridges. The personality of the east side is entirely different. You regard it from what is essentially high desert, hot and dry country, and in many place the entire upward thrust of the eastern escarpment is visible at once, rising as much as 10,000 feet from valley to peaks.

I made this photography early on an autumn morning, from a place high on the gigantic hills rising toward the eastern face of the range. In the foreground are a couple of juniper trees, one of the common trees of the dry Southwest terrain. Further above, open and sparse forest dot the rising slopes. Above it all are the high, alpine peaks of the Sierra crest, here topped by the recognizable profile of Mount Humphreys.

I hope you’ll pardon me for reverting to the Eastern Sierra fall color theme over the next few weeks. It is that time of year again. (For those of you seeing this photograph and wondering if you just missed this year’s color — this photograph comes from a pervious year.) While I have not been up there recently (soon, I hope!) to see how things are coming along, I’ve heard rumors of folks seeing early color more or less on schedule. We’re still roughly two weeks from what I think of as the start of the core aspen color season, starting in early October and generally lasting through the third week or so.

This scene holds a lot of what I look for in the Eastern Sierra in the fall. There are several sub-groves of aspens running across the scene — you can see them by their different phases in the color transition. Here we also see something that you don’t see everywhere in the Sierra, namely rather tall and straight trees. There is a bit of color from some non-aspen brush in the foreground, in the case of this location because it is at the edge of high sage brush country.

Autumn Color and Sierra Crest Peaks

This is, as some of you may notice, a portrait-orientation photograph of a scene that I recently shared using the landscape orientation. Why two different approaches, you may ask? That could be a bit of a complicated question, as there are multiple possible reasons. Heck, you might just wonder if I was able to make up my mind! In fact, this scene “works both ways,” I think. The landscape orientation goes with the long horizontal stretch of the distant ridge and the band of colorful aspens at the bottom, and it also reveals some additional color that lies outside of the vertical image to the right. On the other hand, I think that the vertical interpretation may do a better job of presenting the scale of the vertical rise from the foreground to those towering, distant peaks. I could go on, but I’ll end by pointing out that sometimes both orientations prove useful, so I don’t shy away from doing both.

The scene is a long canyon in the Eastern Sierra that rises from the hot, dry terrain of Owens valley, ascends a long river drainage that twists and splits and gradually transitions to subalpine forest, and finally culminates well into the alpine zone with its rocky terrain and high peaks. Canyons like this one can be good places to look for aspen color in the fall — for one thing, because they cover such a large elevation range there is likely to be color somewhere within them over a relatively long period of time.
