Signs of Autumn, Manhattan

Signs of Autumn, Manhattan
“Signs of Autumn, Manhattan” — Autumn colors and fallen leaves along a pathway in Manhattan.

I don’t know how many of you (who view these posts at my website) pay attention to the “categories” listings. They group the posts by their subject and focus, and the photographic posts always include the categories appropriate to their subjects — they might be “nature,” or “New York City,” or “Fall,” and so on. This photograph fits into a rather broad set of them, including those listed in the previous sentence and more. Yes, it is a fall nature photograph from New York City!

There’s little to suggest this location (unless you look very closely) but I made this photograph while walking along the High Line Park on the west side of Manhattan. When I’m in NYC I typically photograph obviously urban subjects — people, buildings, streets, and so forth. But in one section of this urban trail there were big piles of lovely autumn leaves, fallen from trees planted along the elevated walkway.

Ways

Ways
“Ways” — A graffiti-filled side alley in Glasgow, Scotland.

We visited a number of Scottish towns and cities, ranging from small villages where we were lodged during our Great Glen Way trek up to the urban centers of Edinburgh and Glasgow. We were actually in Glasgow twice. Our (long!) flight from the West Coast of the USA (in two segments) terminated in Glasgow, so we had made arrangements to walk the short distance from the terminal to the closest hotel and fall asleep. The next morning we took a shuttle into Glasgow to catch a trail to Oban, and while waiting we walked just a bit around downtown. But it wasn’t until we returned a couple of weeks later that we had a chance to explore this city.

We liked Glasgow even more than we expected to. We had read various things about the city — some suggested that it was more mundane than its bigger neighbor Edinburgh, but others touted its charm, quirkiness, “workaday” quality, and street art. In the end, we ended up agreeing with the latter reaction. There’s plenty to see and do there, but it doesn’t have the same tourist pressure that we saw in Edinburgh. I made this photograph near the end of a very long walk we took one day. Perhaps it doesn’t quite illustrate the point I’m trying to make about the town, but it was a fascinating little alley off of one of the main thoroughfares.

Coffee Building

Coffee Building
“Coffee Building” — An old, dilapidated building near the Borough Market, London.

Our London lodgings in June were near the end of Blackfriars Bridge, not far from the Tate Modern Museum, the New Globe Theatre, and plenty of other interesting stuff. We were perhaps a ten minute walk from Borough Market, another favorite of ours. So one morning we headed that way for morning coffee and a bit of photography — there’s a lot of interesting stuff to see in and around the Market. As we turned up a narrow street near our destination I saw this fascinating, dilapidated store front.

I was surprised that this quiet street was lined with closed businesses, considering its proximity to some pretty vibrant areas. I’m fascinated by buildings like this one, with their layers of structure and surfaces, some very old, some added over time, and others the result of decay — and I think of them as “street landscapes.” In case you wondered, following that arrow to find coffee would only lead to disappointment.

Bar Bistec, Sevilla

Bar Bistec, Sevilla
“Bar Bistec, Sevilla” — Bar Bistec, a cafe-bar in Sevilla, Spain.

On this morning we crossed the wide canal near the old part of Sevilla where we were staying, and wandered through a newer (less-old?) section of town. After visiting the farmer’s market, we walked through an area with shops and restaurants, then followed streets that paralleled the canal and took us into what one well-known travel writer might describe as “workaday” neighborhoods.

This establishment was in one of those areas. To an American it might seem odd that it was, if my memory is correct, almost next door to a large church — but that’s not so uncommon in Europe. I like several things about this subject, including the arrangement of rectangles, the colors, and the signs. But above all else is that intense daytime light of summer in Spain.
