Have I mentioned that I like backlight and that I especially like trees in morning backlight? Well, yes, I think I have. Even more, I like this subject when the background is filled by distant, rocky mountain slopes in shadow. This little group of trees was nestled against a rocky promontory not far from our camp.

After nearly two days of rain, this was the first morning when we had sun. All of us were more than ready for this development, and soon everyone was out and about, enjoying the dry weather and warm light. (We also continued to be impressed by the unusually high creek levels and the nearby lake that was now completely full of sediment washed down from the peaks.)

After sharing a lot of color photographs from Death Valley (along with one or two in monochrome), this one seemed to work best in black and white. It might seem counterintuitive to those who associate black and white with old-school “realism,” but monochrome often allows and even demands greater levels of “manipulation” than color and is even further removed from that illusive concept of realism. (Hint: The world is not monochromatic!)

Working in monochrome allowed me to produce a high key version of the subject, a layering of dune lines and curves leading toward the highest peak. Overall the image is rather light, but I was able to emphasize some of the darker textures, too. (Because the image is light, gray can almost imply black.)

If you look closely you may find aspens in just about every state of autumn color transition — nearly bare trees, brightly colored yellow and orange trees, and a few that are early in their transition or even still entirely green. This is a reminder that when you visit the Eastern Sierra aspens in the fall, if the color isn’t what you were looking for in one spot there is a good chance that you can find color by moving north or south or heading to a different elevation. While you take that close look, also notice some taller trees (a bit tricky to find) that are entirely bare but surrounded by smaller, very healthy aspens. When aspens are disrupted by fire or other problems, new growth frequently springs up from their extensive root systems, sometimes in weeks, and before too many years those trees engulf the old snags.

The view here encompasses terrain that rises from sagebrush highlands in the Eastern Sierra toward conifer forests at higher elevations. Aspens often grow in this sage country, in places as essentially the only large trees. Here we’re right at the lower boundary of the conifers, beginning with the single large specimen in the center of the frame, with a larger grove halfway up the slope, and hints of much larger forested areas near the top margin.

By this point it is probably no secret that I’m a fan of almost any subject that gets backlit. That kind of light is high on my list of things I look for when I doing landscape photography, especially away from the golden hours times. When the light shines from behind trees, their needles and leaves can seem to glow and their color becomes more intense. (A few friends refer to this a “G Dan light,” but I know I’m not alone in this fascination with back light.)

I made this photograph at a Yosemite wilderness lake where we were camped for about a half of a week a few years ago. The scene was perhaps a bit less alpine than the terrain that I’m usually attracted to, but the gentle landscape of this spot grew on me as we spent time there and I explored it. At least twice a day, morning and evening, I wandered out to walk around the edges of this lake, becoming acquainted with its features and the various ways that the light changed throughout the day.
