“Geese in Flight, Winter Sky” — A flock of snow geese in flight against a winter dusk sky, California Central Valley.

February seems to be the time of year when California’ over-wintering migratory birds become restless. Earlier in the season they often seem somewhat inactive and may be difficult to locate, but on February days, at least in my experience, they are more active throughout the day and are present in much greater numbers . I estimate that at one point I saw perhaps multiple tens of thousands of geese on one large system of ponds.. By evening they were everywhere, and the sound was simply astonishing.

I’ve written that my ideal winter bird photography weather calls for tule fog in the morning and hazy sky during the rest of the day. This was not that kind of day. The sun rose in clear air, and hardly any clouds appeared in the blue sky, aside from a few low clouds far to the east along the line Sierra Nevada. (At times, snow-covered peaks were visible above the clouds.) Just after sunset the sky turned pink above the blue-gray of the earth’s shadow, and this huge flock of (mostly) snow geese wheeled wildly in front of the pink-gray boundary.

The experience of photographing winter’s migratory birds in California might be divided into several sorts of exercise. One is looking for the birds, often without finding them or perhaps spotting them too far away to photograph. Then there is the experience, after not finding them, of waiting for their hoped-for arrival, perhaps spending time doings something else entirely. When they do show up we then watch, often making a few hopeful initial photographs as they do the same things we’ve photographed before.

Sometimes we manage to get very close — occasionally because the geese, by some miracle, come to us, rather than due to our skills are finding them. The geese have work to do, and they seem almost oblivious to our presence as they feed. The flocks often move slowly across the landscape, producing a remarkable low, droning sound. If you have watched them long enough you know that eventually they will move, sometimes by leaving in groups that follow one after another, but sometimes in a sudden and virtually unpredictable eruption of flight that produces first a sort of “ripping” sound as thousands of pairs of wings flap and the flock becomes airborne.

It is possible to find solitude, even in national parks, though it may take a bit of effort. I was completely alone in this remarkable place to experience an utterly beautiful sunrise. All it took was getting up an hour and a half before sunrise, heading up into desert mountains in the predawn darkness when the temperature barely cleared twenty degrees, and driving to the end of a gravel road that crosses the crest of a desert mountain range.

I made the photograph on the same morning that I made several others that I have recently shared. The sky and the light were astonishing — broken lines of thin clouds spread across the sky before dawn, and they lit up in the first light, casting pink light across the landscape.

A lone horseback rider heads onto a California plain filled with spring wildflowers and backed by distant snow topped peaks.

Continuing today with the bittersweet 2020 theme that is a combination of “wish I could be here” and “at least I can take a virtual trip,” here is a photograph from Spring back in 2019, when I was out and about and making photographs in several beautiful areas of California. (In truth, my current situation is much better than that of many other people — I don’t have that much to complain about — so let’s focus on the positive here!)

I had spent part of a couple of days exploring and photographing this area as I passed through on my way to a California desert location. Most of the time was spent making pure nature photographs, but I couldn’t resist taking advantage of a serendipitous moment when a group of horseback riders wandered into the foreground of this grand vista of flower-covered plain and distant snow-capped mountains.
