Four Sandhill Cranes

Four sandhill cranes take flight above a dormant San Joaquin Valley field

At some point every fall my attention turns to (along with a few other seasonal things) the arrival of migratory birds in California’s Great Central Valley. In earlier times this was a landscape full of seasonal pools and marshlands, and it reportedly supported uncountable numbers of birds. Much of the wetland terrain has now been taken for farming and other purposes, but some has been preserved and the birds still come. By the time late fall and early winter roll around again, an impressive number of birds arrive: geese, sandhill cranes, swans, and more. I lived in California since I was a small child and I never knew about this, even though much of the action takes place within a day’s drive of where I grew up. Even today, it seems that few Californians are aware of the rich annual spectacle that takes place so close to them.

I made my first bird photography foray of the season a few weeks before this visit, but by this late December visit a lot more birds had shown up — including the geese who seemed strangely absent earlier. (The three years of very serious drought in California are doubtlessly part of the explanation.) There were a lot of sandhill cranes. I’m not sure if the numbers have increased, of it they just happened to be in places where I could find them more easily, but I sure saw a lot of them. When photographing these birds we always take steps to make ourselves less visible and threatening to the birds — we often photograph from inside our vehicles, and when we can and do get out to photograph we try to avoid disturbing the birds. However, this group was a surprise, showing up very close to us as we crept past slowing in a vehicle and taking to the air almost immediately. Fortunately I had my camera handy and I was able to stop immediately and track their flight as they took off and circled us.

Morning Frost, Fog, and Trees

Foggy sunrise light on San Joaquin Valley trees and winter frost

This is quite literally a photograph of the dawn of 2015, made as the sun rose on January 1, 2015. A group of photographer friends has developed what seems to be becoming a tradition: meeting before dawn at a central California location to greet the first sunrise of the year, and then spending the day photographing wildlife and landscape, sharing lunch and stories, and generally having a great time. (This was the third New Year’s Day we have done this.) I suppose that an added benefit of this is that getting up at 4:00 AM on New Year’s Day means that staying up to midnight the night before is not an option!

This place is often very foggy at this time of year — the sort of fog that slows you down to a crawl as you drive along Central Valley back roads. It was supposed to be clear and cold on New Year’s Day. It certainly was cold — 23 degrees at one point. But although it was clear everywhere else, we still have fog in the early morning. We headed out to a spot where we thought the wildlife and sunrise light would be great and waited for dawn. Even though the spectacular sunrise was playing out to my east, I loved the way the light and fog and frost worked together on this scene to my north.

Evening Sky, San Joaquin Valley

In late December, as winter began, we spent a day photographing in our favorite area of the San Joaquin Valley, where we shoot migratory birds and the austere and often atmospheric landscape of the Central Valley. The primary excise for going there at this time of year is virtually always the birds: geese, ibises, sandhill cranes, herons, egrets, white pelicans, and many more. For most of the day this was our primary subject, starting in the thick early morning fog and continuing as it began to lift, and then later when we returned after lunch to find a bit more light getting through.

Very late in the day the bird action diminished — many of the geese were in nearby areas that are inaccessible to us, and other birds were either quieter or hidden in more distant locations. It seemed like the bird photography was winding down for the day. (Though there was a special surprise a bit later on.) At about this time, what had been a thick deck of fog and clouds began to break up to the west, and just before sunset the clouds thinned enough to let in some direct soft light which glowed luminously on the clouds and in the hazy atmosphere. Oh, about that surprise… A bit later it really seemed like the birds were unusually quiet and we pretty much stopped photographing them as the light began to fade. (Often we continue shooting until it is simply too dark to focus and make exposures.) The members of our group, who had been spread over several miles of this particular refuge, collected together near the exit to say goodbye… as cranes arrived, followed moments later by a deep dusk fly-in by thousands of geese who landed in near darkness on the pond next to where we were standing and watching.

Let’s welcome the New Year with a sunrise photograph! Happy New Year 2015! I made the photograph a bit more than five years ago, during a fall trip to the Eastern Sierra to photograph autumn colors. I made a series of similar photographs on this morning, at least one of which I have shared in the past. However, as I worked my way though a decade’s worth of old raw files during the past few weeks, I came on this one and felt that it could work will in the panoramic presentation seen here.

As I recall, on that morning I had awakened at my camp higher up in the mountains, planning to head further up the canyon before daybreak to photograph high elevation aspen trees. However, the light did not look promising, as it was quite overcast. I realized that it was one of those mornings when there was a chance for a special lighting condition that occurs when it is clear far to the east, and right at sunrise a narrow band of light breaks under the clouds and sends a line of light across the eastern face of the Sierra, light that works its way down from top to bottom as the sun comes up. So I quickly changed plans and headed the opposite direction and out into the “Buttermilk Country” below the Sierra, arriving just in time to find this beautiful light.
