A rainy evening in Amsterdam

This was my/our first visit to Amsterdam and the Netherlands. We started the day in London, where we caught a train to Amsterdam, arriving in the afternoon. Because the weather has often been quite warm — hot, even — in Europe this summer, I was expecting something similar here. It was not cold, but it wasn’t the same kind of hot weather we had in London and which we had later on in parts of Germany. I admit to having been a bit ignorant about the Amsterdam weather. I remarked to some locals we were eating with that I was surprised by the rain and they sort of laughed, pointing out that gray and wet is the norm here.

And, in fact, it was gray and wet when we made our first foray in to central Amsterdam from our hotel just outside the hubbub of the central area. We were hungry and looking for food, so off we went. A number of things struck this first-time Amsterdam visitor right away. First, everything you have heard about bicycles there is true — if anything, there are even more bikes than you thought. These aren’t American-style mountain and road bikes. They are sturdy “work” bikes that are used for the business of getting from place to place. Second, everything you have heard about the availability of marijuana here is also true. If you didn’t already know, don’t go to an Amsterdam “coffee shop” of you want coffee… I made this photograph as we walked this rainy street on our way to dinner.

Soft evening light on Mount Conness, in the distance beyond Tenaya Lake

I’ve been (mostly) off the grid since early this past week while spending four days in the high country in and around Yosemite’s Tuolumne Meadows. (Tuolumne Meadows used to have poor cell service. It now seems to have none at all, which is a mixed blessing.) This being July, there was a lot of interesting stuff to see in the Sierra — there is still plenty of flowing water (at least for this low-precipitation year), most meadows are still lushly green, and the wildflowers are spectacular. While there are plenty of people up there — and, it seems, more every year — the August crush of high country tourists hasn’t yet arrived. Evidence? I was able to walk up to the kiosk and get a campsite in the middle of the day.

Weather was sometimes a challenge. Clouds are both a blessing and a curse when photographing the high country. Most often they are plus, given that the Sierra can be “afflicted” by successive days of boring blue skies at times. On the other hand, it is certainly possible to have too much of a good thing, and at times the welcome “interesting” weather evolved into somewhat “blah” light. However, it is common for moments of special light to appear out of the blah conditions, and I was treated to several such instances on this trip. (One of them may soon be the genesis of an article on knowing when to stay and wait and when to move on.) On this evening I suspected that late light might cut through the haze and create some dramatic effects on the distant Mount Conness from this familiar location, so I headed straight there late in the day.

A gate opens to a courtyard, Paris

This photograph was one in a series of quick snaps — street photography done while on the move, with barely time to stop and compose the image. We ended up here almost by accident. We were working our way towards a museum at which there was an exhibit of photography that seemed interesting, and our route took us through this old area.

The gate was open as we walked past, revealing an interior courtyard. It was entirely empty, except for one very well dressed man, sitting on a step near the wall and staring intently at his cell phone.

A very worn and weathered Paris wall, plastered with flyers for the “Exposition Le Bikini.”

This is perhaps a bit of a whimsical photograph. As we walked through an older section of Paris back in 2016 we started coming upon lots of these posters. I assume that the event must have happened recently, as the flyers were worn but not so worn out that they couldn’t be read or seen.

I’m a sucker for worn and weathered surfaces, especially when they hold interesting shapes and forms and when there are layers of old “stuff” on the walls. If you look more closely at this you many find bits of old posters on top of bits of even older flyers.
