Most of the time I tend to treat aspen trees as part of the larger landscape, perhaps with a grove or a few trees as the subject, or even including some trees of a larger scene. But every so often I get the urge to wander inside a grove and photograph individual leaves up close. I spent an hour or so doing just that at an Eastern Sierra grove that was full of leaves spanning the full spectrum of aspen color, from green through yellow and orange to red.

I photographed the subjects in this series using a handheld camera and a macro lens. (Typically I would use a tripod and put a zoom lens on the camera.) By shooting handheld I was able to explore a wide range of composition spontaneously. That is useful with this subject since even very small changes in camera position can produce entirely different juxtapositions of foreground leaves and the beautiful blur of background color and light.

A tree grows in a crack in a large boulder set in forest and reflected in a quiet Sierra Nevada pond.

Although the indications are more subtle than in the wildly colorful aspen groves, this is also a Sierra Nevada fall color photograph. It is not a familiar icon — not remotely so! — but it seems to be “iconic” to me, in the sense that it captures something of the quality of this season when things seem to slow down in preparation for the coming winter.

What are the subtle autumn signifiers in this photograph? There is one obvious feature in the tiny patch of yellow leaves at the far right. But those grasses lining the banks of this small pond are another indicator — while they are still green at their bases, the upper tips have gone to yellow and brown. There is something about the quality of the light, too. It always seems softer to me at this time of year, especially in shaded areas like this one.

As I continue my pandemic project of reviewing years of raw files — and discovering and rediscovering all sorts of interesting things — I have now arrived at the very end of 2012. I’m currently working on the final week or so of autumn and about to move into winter and then on to 2013. One silver lining behind the dark coronavirus cloud is that I have had the time and inclination to revisit these old images and relive some of the experiences I had as I made them.

Every fall migratory birds return to overwinter in California’s Central Valley. Starting in about November I turn my attention that way and start to anticipate visits to this landscape — one that I don’t tend to photograph during the warmer months of the year. But in the cooler and wetter seasons, when the birds can be abundant, this part of California calls to me. I made this photograph on a cold and foggy late-autumn morning as the tule fog was beginning to thin, casting soft light on the autumn foliage of the scattered trees.

A solitary tree growing among fallen boulders is dwarfed by a sandstone cliff, Capitol Reef National Park.

Earlier on this late afternoon the had worked our way into an wide accessible sandstone canyon with tall walls, lots of boulders, and trees placed in interesting places. As the afternoon wore on these tall red rock cliffs that had been so interesting in better light began to bring an early twilight, and we decided we were done for the day. We hiked back to our vehicle, loaded up, and began our trip back out of the canyon.

We headed a short distance north and then the road jogged west and opened to the fading light as the sun set. (It sets a bit early here on the west side of Capitol Reef as the terrain slopes up noticeably to the west.) We immediately stopped, unloaded, and went to work photographing. The light was somewhat unusual, and it somehow desaturated the red of the sandstone. In this narrow section the wall on the north side is quite abrupt and steep, and its base is littered with boulders that have fallen as it has eroded over millennia. Among the giant boulders a single tree grew.
