The Old Cypress
“The Old Cypress” — An old, gnarled monterey cypress grows along the cliffs of Point Lobos State Reserve.

Recently California and the West have been suffering through long periods of extreme heat. Fortunately, I live close enough to the coast that I can get over there on the worst days. I knew it was going to be hot so I got up early and drove to Point Lobos just south of Carmel, where I found thick fog and temperatures in the upper 50s. The fog typically pulls back from the coast fairly quickly on hot days, but this time it stuck around in o the afternoon. I spent the morning hours photographing here before heading back home where it ended up about 40 degrees warmer.

This is a fascinating specimen of Monterey cypress, a tree that is native here and only a couple of other locations. At Point Lobos many of them grow along the edges of steep cliffs, especially along the north shore, and this old tree is hanging onto its perch seeming by a thread.

“Lichen-Covered Tree, Fog” — A lichen-covered tree near at the edge of the coastal morning fog lne.

Unless you have been living through our West Coast heat wave, you might not quite be able to imagine the glorious sense of relief to be standing in this spot on a recent morning. Anticipating another 100+ degree day, I got up early and drove over the mountains to the coast south of San Francisco, hoping for fog. I found it, along with temperatures as low as 55 degrees!

It was almost too foggy right on the coast, believe it or not, so I drove inland a bit to find that wonderful zone at the edge of the fog bank where the fog thins and soft light suffuses the landscape. I doubt that much of anyone would take much notice of this lichen-covered tree on a sunny day, much less stop to photograph it — but on this morning it represented everything that was lovely about this cool, foggy morning.

Japanese Maple, Spring
“Japanese Maple, Spring” — New spring growth on a Japanese maple tree, Hakone Gardens.

We have a couple of Japanese maple trees that we planted many years ago at our home. (We thought they were small trees, but we now know from practical experience that they can grow to be very large!) They are beautiful trees, with lovely green foliage that is thick enough to provide deep shade in summer. They produce beautiful fall colors, and their seeds “fly” though the air — our kids called them “helicopter” seeds.

I photographed this branch of a Japanese maple during our spring visit to the Hakone Estate and Gardens, where there is a beautiful Japanese garden. We were there to celebrate the cherry blossoms, but there was much more to see as we wandered the grounds as the day ended and evening arrived.

Winter Tree, Dawn Sky
“Winter Tree, Dawn Sky” — A solitary tree in front of a winter sunrise, California Central Valley.

This photograph is the result of an unexpected and disappointing happenstance… that turned out fine in the end. I had driven a couple of hours before dawn to photograph in the Central Valley. But when I arrived I found a small group of people waiting outside a locked gate. That happens sometimes, and sooner or later the gate opens automatically. But this time it did not, and we could not find a way to open it. Rather than sit around and wait — and miss the sunrise — I headed off to look for alternatives.

A few miles away I came upon a creek and some surrounding wetlands where trees grow. I quickly found a few potential compositions in the rapidly arriving sunrise light. One of the first was this lone tree, silhouetted against ann intensely colorful sky. (Eventually I returned to that locked gate. Someone did finally show up annd open it.)
