This is another “quiet light” photograph, made during the “edge of the day” times when the light is muted and soft, when the glow of light on nearby rocks gently enters the scene. During these hours, especially in the morning, the air is still and cool, the reflective surface of water is unbroken, and the world is a quiet place.

I made this photograph very near to our weeklong backcountry base camp, in a high, rocky spot nestled in the curving shore of an 11,000′ lake in a valley full of meadows, boulders, and running water. The high valley was surrounded by even higher peaks, and every morning before the sun rose above those ridges we have and hour of more of this light.

Curving Beach, Fog

Fog retreats to the shoreline above a curving beach near Point Sur.

This is the same location where I made a couple of other recently posted photographs — a spot along the Pacific Coast Highway not far from the town of Big Sur, where a long, curving beach runs out toward a peninsula that has long been the home to an iconic California light house.

Much to my surprise, I encountered really beautiful conditions on this morning visit to the area. The forecast had called for essentially clear conditions, but I was instead greeted by a persistent fog bank that remained right along the coast, stubbornly intruding into the hills in some locations, while pulling back and allowing sunlight over the ocean in others. This scene was dynamic as I photographed it, with the fog intermittently rising and falling or drifting across this scene, located near the delta of a river that empties into the Pacific near the small hill sitting on the beach.

A window covered with security bars.

If this were my window — on this particular street, in this particular position, in this particular city — I suppose that I would install a security system like this, too. (It isn’t exactly a “bad” area, but it is one where many thousands of people walk past daily, and the window is right along the sidewalk.)

But that’s not really why I made the photograph. I thought the gently suffused lighting was attractive, and I liked the combination of colors, shapes, and light and shadow. Aside from whatever intrinsic value or meaning this photograph may (or may not) have, it is another example of the fact that there are things to see everywhere, and that, in my view, photographing them is a useful way to “tune up” your ability to see things that not everyone might notice.

Fog, Little Sur River

Fog near the delta of the Little Sur River.

Since I first traveled to the Big Sur coastline as a child, I have returned many times for decades. The upper end of this area is barely an hour’s drive from my home, so I can be there and back in less than a day if the conditions look promising. Ironically, they actually did not initially look that way on this morning — the weather forecast was for perfectly (and boringly!) clear weather and more warmth than I’d like. But barely a half hour into my drive I began to encounter fog, and it continued for the rest of the day. Some places were entirely socked in. Others, like this spot, were in that wonderful condition where there would be fog one moment and sunshine the next.

I know this particular spot quite well. It is a remarkable location, where a long beach is broken by the delta of the Little Sur river as it empties into the Pacific. This is a place of constant change, driven by winds, precipitation, and seasonal water flows. When I visited earlier this year the river had cut a different channel that would have taken it from right to left along the bottom of this scene, reaching the ocean out of camera range far to the left. But since then it has returned to its more typical channel, which makes a bit s-turn towards and around the short headland, creating a beautiful pool.
