“Stained Glass Light ” — Light from stained glass windows on columns, Cathedral of St. John the Divine, New York.
I have visited some remarkable cathedrals in Europe, and I obviously have seen stained glass windows. But I paid less attention to the light shining through them until we visited Sagrada Familia in Barcelona a few years ago. We entered late in the day as light streamed though that church’s remarkable windows, and the effect was simply astonishing. After that I began to notice similar, though subtler, effects in other big churches.
“Morning Reflections, Lake Manly Shoreline” — Morning clouds and desert mountains reflected in Lake Manly.
By now, those of you who follow my posts have figured out that I made quite a few photographs of Lake Manly on this partly cloudy morning. I hope you’ll forgive me, but the appearance of this lake is not an everyday event, and I wanted to take advantage of this opportunity. (Not only did I photograph it a lot on this trip, but I also photographed it two months earlier at the end of December.)
“Tree, Sandstone Cliff” — A solitary juniper tree grows at the base of the sandstone cliff.
This photograph comes from a visit to Southern Utah with a couple of photographer friends some years ago. We took a week to make a loop through the southern part of the state that took in Cottonwood Canyon, the Escalante area, and a few days in the Capitol Reef neighborhood. That latter location is where I made this photograph of a juniper tree in front of a massive sandstone cliff face.
“Stilts and Geese” — Four black-necked stilts wade in front of a flock of snow geese.
This photograph comes from my second-to-last trip of the season to photograph migratory birds in California’s Central Valley. (See ya’ next year, geese!) Early in the season I try to time my visits for the best bird photography weather — a bit of morning fog, clearing later in the morning, and interesting clouds for sunset. But at this point, merely weeks before the geese would depart, I could not be as choosy!
