Vertical Forms and Reflections

Vertical forms and reflections

Vertical forms of downtown buildings and reflections in windows – San Francisco, California.

On this mid-September morning I wandered up Market Street from the Ferry building just as the fog was beginning to clear back from the waterfront. The light on the downtown buildings was stunning – still relatively low given the early hour, occasionally interrupted by a few lingering clouds, and with a deep blue sky background. Instead of focusing on the street scene – at least for the most part – instead I photographed the angles, colors, and forms of the buildings and the effects of light and reflections on their surfaces.

Grass, Point Lobos

Grass, Point Lobos

A thick carpet of spring grass at Point Lobos State Reserve, California.

As I hiked through the pine forest in the southern part of the Point Lobos State Reserve on a foggy day during the last weekend of April the spring grasses and wildflowers (and poison oak!) were growing everywhere. I had stopped to photograph a scene of pines with a meadow containing yellow flowers when I spotted one large clump of very green grass that had been blown or otherwise pushed into this interesting pattern.

This is the second a series of two photographs of this small section of twisted, convoluted rock texture right next to the water not far from Weston Beach at Point Lobos State Reserve.

I spent a mostly foggy and cloudy day at Point Lobos State Reserve south of Carmel, California during the last weekend of April. (I wrote elsewhere about the miraculous coincidence of my visit with the Big Sur Marathon, which delayed my arrival at the park a bit but ultimately meant that I was virtually the only person in the entire park!) I started at the actual “Point Lobos” – the punta de los lobos marinos area – and gradually worked my way south along the waterline. After stopping to photograph a family if harbor seals I decided to more closely inspect some of the twisted and colorful rock formations and textures and I ended up making some photographs of them, along with some semi-macro shots of shells and other shoreline detritus.
