Wetlands Birds, Dawn Fog

“Wetlands Birds, Dawn Fog” — Black-necked stilts and other wetland birds in a quiet pond as dawn fog begins to thin.

Believe it or not, I still have more photographs from our three days of photography around New Year’s Day. To recap, a group of friends and fellow photographers assembled before dawn to greet the first sunrise of the new year. We spent the rest of the day sharing food and good times and photographing this landscape and its wildlife.

The photograph was made quite early, well before the fog began to clear. This is shallow tule fog, which can be dense enough to hamper driving, but shallow enough that you can look up and see the sky directly overhead. The fog glowed with the colors of the overhead sunrise sky as a few black-necked stilts went about their morning business in the pond.

Street Vendor, Madrid

“Street Vendor, Madrid” — A street vendor sits on his stool on the sidewalk by his wares at the El Rastro street market, Madrid.

Near the end of our December visit to Madrid we went on a long walk that took us to the famous El Rastro Sunday street/flea market in the Barrios de Embajadores area. From what I gather, this market has been going on for centuries. There is a small market square, but the main action takes place up and down nearby streets where scores of vendors are set up and thousands of shoppers completely fill the narrow streets.

If you like observing and photographing people and don’t mind working in close quarters, this event presents a plethora of visual opportunities. The market stalls are fascinating, as are the wildly diverse shoppers checking out them out. You can find almost anything here: clothes, toys, hats, cameras, phones, cookware, food, you name it. I photographed this vendor, sitting on a stool in an uncharacteristically minimalist “booth.”

Oak Tree, Sun and Fog

“Oak Tree, Sun and Fog” — Sunlight streams through thinning fog on a hillside behind an old oak tree.

This is the third and final photograph from my recent local “foggy morning” photography. To recap, when low fog stuck around here for hours (it usually dissipates very early) I headed out to the local rural landscape to make some photographs. This tree is in an area south of San Jose that was once destined to be a technology park. There’s a lot of history there, but the short story is that after the local government gave in to developer pressure there were no takers for the technology park. Today it remains relatively rural and is increasingly protected. I’d call that a victory!

The tree is on private land, from what I can tell, though clearly visible from a nearby roadway. The hills in the background form a low ridge that roughly parallels the edge of the valley for miles. At the moment I made the photograph the tree was out of the fog, but it was just thinning in the hills, and beautiful slanted columns of light formed between the shadows of trees.

Outdoor Plumbing, Madrid

“Outdoor Plumbing, Madrid” — A rather immodest toilet on a streecorner in Madrid.

Near the end of our visit to Madrid we went for a long walk, One goal was El Rastro, where there is a long-standing street market every Sunday. Our walk was pleasant, passing through interesting neighborhoods and past historical sites. But this particular sight caught me off guard. You might imagine this is a sign of a run down neighborhood, but that isn’t my recollection. But there was this one odd little corner featuring a small toilet/outhouse with the door wide open. So I had to photograph it, right?

I can imagine that at least a few of you who follow my landscape photography might wonder if I’ve lost the thread here. However, I think that just about anything has potential as a photograph, sometimes even things that aren’t exactly pretty. Sometimes a difficult image can be beautiful, though I’m necessarily making that claim here. Other times it can reveal something about a subject or even tell a story. And such a photograph might just leave you asking some questions — which isn’t a bad thing.
