Evening cloud forms above the Pacific Ocean coastline near Davenport, California.

This is the second of a pair of abstract images of evening clouds that I photographed earlier this week along the California coastline north of Davenport. The photographs were shot with fairly long focal lengths and then converted to black and white in post, where additional modifications to the original images were also made.

Eroded and folded patterns of gullies and rounded hills in morning light – Zabriskie Point, Death Valley National Park, California.

Part of the recent series of photographs of details of the amazing landforms around Zabriskie Point, this image includes a small section where the folds of the earth line up one behind the other almost like waves – albeit rather soft and rounded waves. This was shot during the “best light” period of early morning when the light from the rising sun angles across these shapes, here softened a bit by some high clouds that were present in this morning.

Detail photograph of patterns of barren hills and gullies at Zabriskie Point, Death Valley National Park, California.

From my series of detail photographs of smaller elements of the landscape at Zabriskie, and another one shot during atypical times of day – in this case in very bright afternoon sunshine. Because of these lighting conditions – color, intensity, and angle, the quality of the image is less “dreamy” than the typical early morning soft-light photographs of this area. Here you see more clearly the rough texture of the material making up the folds and gullies of these interesting hills that drop into Gower Gulch.
