A rocky peninsula, an alpine lake, reflections of the headwall in evening light

In high places like this, where cirque walls tower over alpine lakes and block the light early and late in the day, evening quiet can come early. I had been walking to this spot almost daily for several days to try to make a photograph of a particular group of trees that caught the last sunlight in the late afternoon. On this day my timing was (finally!) right, and after I made that photograph I turned my attention to the rest of the scene, which was now in shadow.

To my left a small rocky peninsula pushed out into the lake near its outlet stream and supported a few trees and small plants that could gain a foothold it its cracks. Across the lake piles of talus lay at the bottom of the solid rock face of the valley’s headwall, where one snow patch remained, reflected in the quiet surface of the lake. That surface also reflected the rest of the face, including parts so high that they are not in direct view. The entire scene was illuminated by the soft blue light coming from the open sky above and behind me.

Main interior space of the historic, modernist architecture Austrian Postal Savings Bank

Today I’m breaking up the stream of Eastern Sierra autumn color photographs and returning to the even larger stream of photographs from our travels this past summer. This time we’re back in Vienna, where we spent four nights back in August. It was our first visit and, as seems to be the case with first visits to such places, the experience was a combination of being fascinated/impressed by the city along with beginning to get a sense of its character. Four days is, of course, too little time to really understand a place, but during four days our relationship to such a place changes quite a bit.

We got a recommendation from someone to locate and visit the Austrian Postal Savings Bank (Österreichische Postsparkasse), and we’re glad we went. The place does not seem at all to be on the lists of “things you must see in Vienna,” but if you are interested in architecture and history it probably should be. I won’t try to recount my limited understanding of the history here (there are great resources online, and you can start with Wikipedia) but the modernist building is remarkable, both in its overall effect and in its details. This photograph shows the main room, now mostly vacant, which is a remarkable modern, bright, and airy space, lit from about via a huge skylight.

Big Sur Coast Headlands

Thinning fog over the Big Sur coast beyond rugged headlands

This was a particularly “quiet” section of the coast on the day I visited. Elsewhere the wind was blowing, sometimes pushing fog across the roadway, and often making photography a bit of a challenge. But here there was shelter from the wind, and the ocean was relatively calm. A fog bank lay across the water in the distance, though it was nearly gone as the day warmed up.

There are impressive headlands all along this section of the Pacific Coast Highway through the Big Sur coast, but this area just south of the town of Big Sur has some of the tallest and steepest sections. I often take this landscape for granted, as I have lived nearby for almost my entire life — and then, every so often, it hits me that it must be one of the most monumental meetings of land and sea on the planet, both for the rugged landscape itself and for the distance across which it stretches.

Cloud shadows on water as fog dissipates above Point Sur and beaches near the outlet of the Little Sur River

In many locations along the Big Sur coast on this mid-summer morning, the fog was breaking up as I drove south from the Monterey area, heading for the newly reopened section of the Pacific Coast Highway near the small town of Gorda. I stopped as I came to this familiar sight — a place where the road descends and provides a series of evolving views of the beaches near the mouth of the Little Sur River near Point Sur.

As the clouds begin to thin, alternating bands of light and shadow move across the landscape, and from moment to moment this changes to scene. I tried to time this photograph for a moment when key features of the landscape were illuminated — the curving beach, sections of the shallow ocean, and some of the more distant headlands.
