Morning light shines into the bottom of a desert canyon.

One of the things I like about this photograph is that it gives virtually no clues about when it was made — it could be a burning hot summer day, or it could be a winter day. In addition, there isn’t much to provide scale — is this canyon small and intimate or is it gigantic? The truth is that I made the photograph on a very cold winter morning, and the photograph is of of the bottom of a very large Death Valley canyon that winds up into mountains.

I think there is a lot going on in this scene, and with most of the components you could regard them for what they are or you could consider them for the graphic contribution. The bottom of the canyon winds back and fort and then disappears around a bend. The backlit top edges of gullies descend from left to right at the bottom of the scene, but descend in contrary motion above that. There is more depth to the scene than might first be apparent — a more distant slope sits in the upper left corner. And the faces are full of bent and twisted strata that have been tilted to a 45 degree angle.

We came to international travel late. When I was younger I could never think of a good reason to travel far away when all of the enticements of California were so near — San Francisco, Los Angeles, the Sierra, the Pacific coast, the redwoods, deserts, and more. It wasn’t until the late 1990s that it occurred to me that the rest of the world might be worth visiting, too. A key moment: a month traveling through Alaska on bicycles, during when we were often in sight of truly giant mountain ranged I realized that “maybe the Sierra aren’t the only worthy mountains.”

During the last decade or so our horizons have broadened. All of this is my way of leading to admitting that this summer 2018 visit was the first time we had been to Vienna. I had lots of reasons to know about Vienna before this, but it was all theoretical until we arrived and spent days wandering and looking… and beginning to understand what an important center this place has been.

Deep in a desert canyon, a dormant plant waits for moisture.

This plant grows in a very unlikely place — in a small crack in the rock face of a canyon wall in a deep wash where there is usually no water at all. No doubt it produced this now-dormant lush growth during a brief wet period when, like so many desert plants, it took advantage of a short interval when moisture was relatively abundant. And now, somewhere under all of these dried up branches and leaves, the heart of the plant waits for the next rain.

By the way, I don’t mind at all if you want to look for analogies to the current societal conditions of social distancing, of putting life on hold, of managing to exist in a dark place, waiting for better conditions to return. Feel free!

One of the things I always think about in desert landscapes is water. Not for the reason your are probably thinking — that it is because there is no water or that I’m thirsty because it is hot and dry. In fact, the reason is that evidence of water is almost everywhere in these dry places. This is one of the great ironies of desert terrain — it is so affected by the power of water and that effect is more visible because the landscape is barren and dry.

Consider this scene. There is almost nothing in it that doesn’t reflect the power of water. The foreground wash, while dry at the time of the photograph, is covered with patterns created by flowing water. Beyond, the low hills are smoothed by water and incised with gullies made by flowing water. Although those far mountains rose because of forces that are not directly about water, the shapes of the peaks and ridges are the result of, yet again, water. And in the sky we have clouds — more water.
