Rocky shoreline of Fletcher Lake and reflections in early morning light – Yosemite National Park, California.

Yet another in the series of morning photographs made in early September 2008 during my brief photographic expedition to Fletcher Lake and surrounding areas in the Yosemite National Park backcountry. Here oblique morning light strikes rocks, bushes, and a small shoreline meadow along the shoreline of the lake.

Shoreline trees, grasses, and rocks catch the morning sunlight and are reflected in Fletcher Lake, Yosemite National Park, California.

This photograph is from near the outlet stream of Fletcher Lake, very close to the Vogelsang High Sierra Camp. Early morning light is beginning to flow around the base of Fletcher Peak and strike the rocks and vegetation along the shoreline right below the peak. This is one of a series of photographs I made on this morning as I wandered around this lake in the early light.

I’ve visited this spot many times in the past. It is along a short trail at Point Lobos that leads through the Monterey cypress forest and right along the tops of the coastal cliffs. I’ve always been intrigued by this little section of trail with this carefully constructed stone stairway leading to a small lone cypress right on the edge of the cliff. It was foggy on the day when I made this photo – I set up the camera and tripod and waited for some light to begin to filter through the thinning fog.

The High Sierra Trail crosses a small stream as it begins to climb out of Big Arroyo toward the Chagoopa Plateau.

On this day our route traveled from the old cabin in Big Arroyo out to Moraine Lake on the Chagoopa Plateau. This section of trail was near the start of the day’s walk as we began our climb out of the Arroyo, through a trail section that was often under forest cover and was crossed frequently by small creeks. I’ve been across this trail section more than once, and this time I managed to avoid being surprised by the climb. When you arrive in Big Arroyo from Kaweah Gap the view convinces you that you have nothing but downhill between there and the Kern Canyon – but you are quite wrong. The trail does follow the bottom of the Arroyo for a few miles, but then it climbs – more steadily and more steeply than you might think – up the east side of the valley to reach the flat area of Chagoopa Plateau.
