Autumn haze hugs the rugged Big Sur coastline.

One of the things that I’ve missed during the past few months is the opportunity to experience landscape on the grand scale. Given the impediments to long-distance travel during the pandemic, a lot of my photography has been done very locally — on daily walks, on hikes in nearby natural areas, and so forth. For this reason — in addition to all of the other usual reasons — a recent day trip down the Big Sur coast was a special joy.

I think of this as a fairly “quiet” image. Yes, this is a stupendously rugged coastline and, yes, that is the Pacific Ocean. But it was a mostly quiet and calm day, without the crowds that are often found along this section of the California coast, and here the coastal haze muted the colors and the outlines of the headlands and buttresses along this section of the Pacific Coast Highway.

With this photograph I believe I’ll conclude my nostalgic return to photographs from my 2012 autumn visits to Utah. It was a special autumn for my in Utah, as I was able to visit twice for a period adding up to almost a full month. On the second visit I was able to travel into some out-of-the-way locations, a few of which were shared with me by people who live and photograph there. That was quite a privilege. It has been too long since I’ve photographed there. Perhaps I can return next year?

This is simply a bit of canyon wall, and the specific location is hardly relevant at all — you can find rock like this all over Utah. Part of what attracted me to this little vignette was the boundary between darker old rock and the lighter rock below where some of the older material has obviously broken away. The surface of the upper, darker area is fascinating to me, and a close look reveals remarkable colors, textures, and shapes on its surface.

Diverse fractures and surface patterns on the sandstone walls of a Utah canyon.

On this late-October day, a cold one in this part of Utah, our little band of photographers took a long drive on a gravel road. Eventually we stopped at an inauspicious pull-out — I don’t recall a sign, though there may have been a small one. We loaded packs and set out across some dry terrain, and soon entered a small canyon at the base of tall hills, a canyon that looked much like many other such canyons.

This was not a large canyon, and our walk into it was shorter than the walk into some longer canyons we had investigated. It was also a rough little place, and it did not give up photographs as easily as some other more-picturesque places. Near the far point in our exploration we came upon this remarkable bit of sandstone canyon wall, with patterns on the surface of the rock that reminded me of sunbursts.

Red Rock and Autumn Color

Early autumn color at the base of Zion Naitonal Park cliffs.

Back in Autumn of 2012 I had an unusual opportunity to spend a total of roughly a month photographing in the red rock country of Southern Utah. I was there early in the month for a couple weeks, and I returned in near the end of the month with photographer friends. On that second visit we concentrated on Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument and on Capitol Reef and Zion National Park. We visited Zion twice — as we entered the state and again as our trip concluded and we started back to California.

From my autumn visits to this part of Utah I started to learned a few things about how fall color evolves there, though my knowledge is far from complete. The first thing I learned is that the aspens change color earlier than in California — more like late September than early October. (I learned this the hard way, by showing up a bit too late to photograph peak aspen color.) The color in the red rock canyons seems to come later, and we had plenty of it to photograph in the second half of the month. When we arrived in Zion National Park at the end of the month interesting color was showing up at higher elevations, but I think we were catching only the very beginning of the color in Zion Canyon. That’s where I made this photograph, with an early riot of color at the base of the ubiquitous red rock cliffs.
