Coming across this little line of snow geese was good fortune. One thing is clear when photographing wildlife, and even more clear when photographing birds: the photographer has little control over the scene and must make the best of what turns up. (OK, there are ways to improve your chances, but geese are notoriously bad at taking stage directions.) It isn’t unusual to find small groups of geese, but finding a group lined up this was was serendipitous.

This is one of the photographs that I think of as “birdscapes” — while they are wildlife photographs, they are more about the place of the wildlife in their surroundings. A closer look shows that there’s a lot more here than the geese. Just beyond the edge of the water there is a row of sandhill cranes, whose darker colors make them a bit harder to see at first. There are trees on the horizon, but also indicators of this being agricultural country and not at all “wilderness,” In the far distance geese fill the sky, and the bands of clouds beyond them are above the faint outline of the crest of the Sierra Nevada.

My recollection of this evening is that I arrived barely in time for late-day photography. I had been photographing elsewhere and calculating my schedule carefully. My plan was to arrive just in time to walk out to an area I had scoped out before, arriving at my destination perhaps a half hour before the sun dropped behind a western mountain range. I would first shoot straight into the setting sun, using its rim light to accentuate the forms of the dunes.

My plan mostly worked, though it took a bit longer to hike to the spot than I expected. By the time I arrived I had less than that anticipated half hour to work in the last direct sunlight, but I set to work and did get some other photographs that I like. Then, as happens in places like this, the mountain shadow moved quickly across my position and the light went from warm-toned and intense to soft and increasingly blue. I turned 180 degrees and photographed this evening cloud above the last direct light on peaks along the east side of Death Valley.

Morning light comes to badlands terrain beneath tall desert mountains.

On the final morning of my late-January visit to Death Valley National Park I decided to visit a location that I rarely photograph. I suppose there were two reasons for my choice. It wasn’t that far from where I was camped, and I wanted to get back to camp by mid-morning to take things down in preparation for my departure. In addition, it is a location that, frankly, hasn’t attracted me all that much for photography. I had been there before several times and came away with little to show for it. (Despite this, one client did purchase a number of prints from this location some years ago.)

An offhand comment by a friend had suggested a different way to look that the place, and as I looked at it from a distance earlier in the week I saw some things that caught my attention. So I headed out there before dawn on this final morning and followed a trail out to the edge of some interesting badlands country. As I worked that subject the light was working its way down the face of the bare desert mountains to the northwest, so I turned my camera that direction as the play of light and shadow evolved.

Fallen leaves on the ground in a winter garden.

This photograph was a bit of a surprise. We had gone to a Bay Area garden to photograph some new flowers that we heard were blossoming. (Last month here felt more like “Maybruary” than February, and spring plants seem to be appearing earlier than usual.) In fact, there were flowers, and I did photograph them. Some of the more traditional photographs of flowers and related greenery should show up here soon.

But I’m always looking for things other than the primary subject, trying to spot surprises and things I might otherwise miss. So as I was admiring some lovely blooms and some ivy growing up a nearby wall… I took a peek into the shadows on the ground underneath the plants, where I spotted piles of old leaves. Some were probably the byproduct of garden maintenance, while others had probably fallen naturally. I suspect that anyone who saw me down on the ground photographing under the plants with the actual flowers may have wondered what the heck I was doing.
