Evening photograph of an urban parking lot near the High Line Elevated Park in the Chelsea area of New York City.

I photographed this parking facility from above as we started down the stairs at the north end of High Line Park. Since I was traveling light at this point I had no tripod – so I made this 1/8 second exposure hand-held. (Image stabilization can be your friend!) Lighting was, to say the least, tricky. Areas of the structure were in deep shadow, but there were also bright artificial light directly within the frame. By some miracle I managed to pretty much capture the full dynamic range in one shot.

These parking elevators are seen all over Manhattan, and they allow cars to be parked several deep on the vertical lift. This was the first time I had the opportunity to shoot one from a position that wasn’t on the ground, and the complicated mass of vertical beams filling the space and lit by artificial light sources seemed like an interesting subject. I haven’t seen the elevators in operation, so I still wonder how the lot operators manage to get the right cars at the top/bottom of each lift so that each person’s car will be at ground level at the right time.

Photograph of a building wall with crack and black windows, sidewalk, and no parking sign.

This is another of those photographs that probably seems intended to perplex and baffle those who like my landscape and nature photography. (If it helps, think of it as an urban landscape.) The photograph was made not far from my home on a midday walk with my camera and a single prime lens. I shot the series from which this comes at what is usually regarded as the worst time of day for photography – close to the noon hour about a week or so before the summer solstice. And I did this on purpose! I think that any light can be good light if it is the light you want to photograph. So the game on this day was to go out and see what I could do with very harsh and bright light.

Shadows on Parking Lot Wall

Shadows from light fall across a parking lot wall.

A photograph made on a walk with a body and a 50mm lens and not much else – a walk from my home. This wall has often intrigued me, as have these small lamps up near the roof line. On this day I was out in the “terrible light” time of the day – midday, when shadows are almost as close to vertical as they get around here. Not only was I attracted to the interesting slight diagonals of the long shadows, but also to the colors of weathered green paint, deep blue sky, and the messy textures of the parking lot.

Yellow Building For Lease

A yellow light industrial building with black windows with a red and white “For Lease” sign, San Jose, California.

Number 3 in the News Day photo-walk series, and this one is perhaps the brightest and most intensely colored of the bunch. This light industrial building has apparently been deserted for a while and it is currently for lease. This bright yellow corrugated metal structure is right across the street from the intense green building from which the previous-posted photography came.
