Tasty Food – Utah Hotel

Tasty Food - Utah Hotel

Tasty Food restaurant in the Utah Hotel, San Francisco, California.

This dilapidated old building is by now more or less a landmark on this corner on Fourth Street at the base of the freeway off-ramp. I figured it would have been condemned years ago when I first saw it while walking to downtown San Francisco from the train station, but it still stands and even appears to get a new coat of paint from time to time.

Man Walking Past Painted Brick Wall

A man walking on the sidewalk past a painted brick wall in Chinatown, San Francisco, California.

I was part way through my long San Francisco photography walk when I noticed this interesting painted wall on a side-street in Chinatown. (For those who wonder how the heck I made a photograph in Chinatown that only included one figure – who is not a tourist! – I was there very early.) The pattern of rectangles and lines made me think of some sort of “pastel Mondrian,” if that makes any sense.

As I was shooting the wall, this man politely wandered through the scene – and he was even wearing the right color hat for the shot!

Brick and Glass Buildings, Evening

Brick and Glass Buildings, Evening

Night urban landscape of brick and glass buildings near ATT&T Park in San Francco, California.

Although these brick buildings – at least the larger one in the background – appear to be relatively recent construction, the patterns and textures of the bricks are still interesting to me. As I continue to squeeze every last photo out of my dusk shoot during a Giants game at AT&T past week here is a photograph that I shot as a light was really starting to go. By a combination of an IS lens and very carefully hand holding the camera on the top of a low wall I managed to get a decent exposure without a tripod.

A Bit of Irony About Today’s Photo

Today’s photograph (the earlier one of Alcatraz in lovely morning light) was made at the tremendously popular parking lot, I mean viewpoint at the north end of the Golden Gate Bridge. On fairly normal days, especially in the afternoon, it can be so crowded there that you simply cannot find a parking space.

On this morning, with this astonishing light, there was only one other person there when I arrived. A couple more showed up as I hung around and made photographs. That was it.
