A meadow and trees in spring, Central Park, Manhattan.

This photograph is evidence. Allow me to explain. We frequently visit New York City, as our sons and their wives live and work there. The running joke is that we always go in the two worst months, August and December. And on every visit they tell us that “you should really come in fall or spring when it is beautiful.” So a few weeks ago I took them up on this and visited at the end of April. You know… spring. It rained almost the entire time. There was thunder and lightning. Roads flooded. Until the last morning.

I had a few hours on my final morning since I didn’t need to get to the airport until afternoon. So I headed toward Central Park and found… sunshine, pleasant temperatures, clear skies, and spring greenery. It was quite pleasant — for a few hours. I headed to the airport and flew back to the West Coast where… it was raining. Someone is playing a cruel joke on me. ;-)

Shortly after my parents moved the family to California, so many decades ago, we started visiting Point Lobos. The biggest adventure in those days was exploring the tide pools. Only later did I branch out and begin to explore the rest of the park, though I was making photographs at the place before I was in high school. Let’s just say that this park and I have a very long history.

I made this photograph on what might be the perfect sort of Point Lobos day. It started with low, thick morning fog that covered everything. Instead of suddenly “burning off,” as is often the case, the fog hung around and only dispersed slowly. As I hiked past this section along the upper edges of north shore cliffs, a hint of blue was beginning to appear and the light was starting to become a bit directional, but there was enough fog to obscure anything very far away.

Afternoon light on desert mountains beyond rocks and playa, Death Valley.

This spot has drawn my attention over many years of visits to Death Valley. It would be easy to miss — it is just a rock-covered hill next to a roadway, in a location where people are most likely looking in a different direction. But I stop here frequently and poke around, looking for photographs. It hasn’t been easy!

One of the challenges here is that, in my view, the best time to photograph here is in the late afternoon, just before the sun drops behind the far ridge. Not only does this bring the challenges of shooting almost directly into the sun, but the black rocks and easy turn into pure black shadows. It is also a bit of a challenge to find combinations of rocks that have some kind of compositional integrity. This photograph comes from an afternoon when some dust and haze highlighted light beams from the late-day sun.

The impetus for this photograph was originally the dark rocks distributed across the smooth, hard surface in the foreground. I started from a camera position to the right of this scene, photographing across the rocks and into the light, which backlit the rocks and made the smooth surface glow. But I wasn’t quite happy with the result so I moved around a bit… and eventually decided to place this ascending canyon behind the rocks.

This part of Death Valley National Park, like other locations there, features stratified deposits of remarkably contrast colors and textures. Here nearly back layers alternate with other layers that are almost white. The formations go on for great distances, and you can see that a bit here by looking up the valley in the center to distant peaks with similar erosion patterns.
