As I was walking along the San Francisco waterfront very early in the morning on July 1, I was shooting the South Beach Harbor when I noticed this fellow standing in the doorway of the Java Hut and motioning to me to take his photograph – I couldn’t refuse. I managed to get two photographs of him in his red apron against the red and white exterior of the coffee shop. (I only realized today that this should have been my July 4 photo!) I didn’t get his name, but I know this place well so I’ll try to take him a print the next time I get up there.

Borch’s Iron Works and Machine Shop – old metal shop building in the downtown area of San Jose, California.

This spare old metal-sided shop building is in a light industrial area in downtown San Jose, near the arena. In early January I wandered past here while on foot photographing city subjects. I liked the very simple shape and yellow color of this building, and the contrast with the intense blue of the late afternoon sky.

Early evening shadows from a nearby tree fall on shop wall behind leaf littered sidewalk and pipe barricade.

A theme on this day’s urban walk was the patterns cast by late afternoon tree shadows on a variety of walls. This example is very close to my home, and the scene is truly unremarkable – you might think of it almost as a “photograph of nothing.”

The Hub Cap City store on San Carlos Street in San Jose, California.

The Hub Cap City has been a landmark of sorts on old San Carlos Street west of downtown San Jose for many years. I think it is easy to see why… :-)
