San Luis Reservoir, Autumn Haze

Soft light and autumn atmosphere obscure the view across the San Luis Reservoir

Since I have previously described the circumstances of photographing this scene, I’ll keep this description short. The San Luis Reservoir is a huge manmade lake in central California, between the south San Francisco Bay Area and the Central Valley. I frequently pass by here as I travel to the Valley, the Sierra, and beyond.

On this day I had been out in the Valley photographing migratory birds and the landscapes in which they are found — my first such visit to the Valley this season. On the way back home I passed the reservoir in the middle of the day, when the bright, late-autumn sun was reflecting off the surface of the lake and making the clouds above the distance mountains glow.

Soft evening light among granite slabs and cliffs in the Yosemite backcountry

Near our Yosemite backcountry camp there was a beautiful granite bowl, with a bench on top with an open view to the west down the canyon of the nearby river. In the late afternoon and evening we were photographing lots of mostly small details in this area — trees growing out of improbably small cracks and potholes, rocks, and the colors and textures of the granite slabs.

As the sun dropped toward the horizon, its light spread almost directly up the length of the canyon. A large wildfire in another part of the park had left the air smoky and the smoke added a warm coloration to the atmosphere. As these conditions came on I remembered that in the past I had found this tree high up on one of the canyon walls in the evening and had photographed it in similar late day light — so I turned the camera in that direction, and just in time! I made a vertical format photograph as the last bright light broke over the shoulder of the granite and lit the tree. I decided to turn the camera to landscape orientation, and by the time I did the light was already starting to leave the tree — and this photograph ended up with softer light and a darker quality than the first one.

Pacific Ocean, Evening Sky and Fog

Thin evening fog clouds drift above the Pacific Ocean along the California coastline.

This is a favorite sort of view of mine along California’s coastline – a calm (almost) summer evening near dusk, but only a few wisps of fog trying to collect themselves along the shoreline, but not quite making it. So much of what I photograph has at least some green in it – so this palette limited to shades of blue and pink seems special.

Although it was not quite so still when I made this photograph – I was along the edge of a bluff not far from the highway – the visual image captures for me the feeling of timelessness that I sometimes experience at the coast. I’ve lived in these areas almost my entire life, so I’m no stranger to the coast and beaches. (Though I continue to see and learn new things. But most such experiences are tied to roads and parking lots and even to urban areas. A few years ago, believe it or not, I had a very different experience with the ocean when I walked perhaps four miles to a point along the sheltered waters of Point Reyes, and coming to the coast on foot I felt, for the first time at the ocean, this sense of deep time and I felt that what I was seeing had probably changed little, if at all, in millennia. I can literally count the number of times that I’ve had the profound realization, and I was alone on each occasion – the Point Reyes experience, on a still evening away from camp above timberline in the Upper Kern River region of the Southern Sierra, and on one memorable day on my first (two-week!) solo backpacking trip when I found myself sitting on top of a 12,000′ Sierra pass for several hours.

Quiet Forest, Reflected Meadow Light

Forest trees are illuminated by soft light reflected from a nearby meadow, Yosemite Valley

This could be any number of places in Yosemite Valley where forest and meadow come together. I was walking from one photographic location to another when I passed by this clump of trees at the edge of the forest and thought about photographing them. I even set up and composed a shot… and then the light died. This was a day when the light was coming and going quickly, and this was especially true in this spot which was not far from the edge of the Valley and the boundary between partial sun and the clouds that gathered around the cliffs. So I continued on a bit and tried to find a way to photograph the other subject that had been my original goal.

Finishing that, I started back and soon came upon these trees again. This time the light was back. Off to the left of the trees was a large open area leading to an even larger meadow a bit further out toward the center of the Valley. As there was more light in the meadow and because there were clouds above, a good deal of the light reaching these trees was diffused side-light rather than the overhead light that might have been here if the weather had been clear. So, once again, I set up the tripod and framed a tight composition of these trees, a bit of the winter-dormant grass at their base, and the denser forest beyond. As I set up I could see that the light wasn’t going to last, and I had time for one decent exposure before the light died again.
