Winter light and haze at Point Sur, California.

This is not the first photograph of this subject from this camera position, to say the least. (Earlier today I ran into an Ansel Adams photograph of essentially the same subject, photographed from a position a short distance to the left.) The feature at the far right is Point Sur, the site of a historic lighthouse that was once one of the most isolated places along this part of the California coast.

Recently I’ve been pondering — not for the first time! — working in ways that focus on the larger forms in a scene and minimize the small details. I’m also interested in how I can produce the glowing, luminous effect of fog and haze that is backlit by low angle sun. This scene seemed right for the approach, since the atmosphere was filled with diffuse fog, and thin high clouds softened and diffused the light.

Autumn tule fog glows in morning sun, blankets a Central Valley levee road, and obscures an old tree.

The subject here is an old Central Valley tree along a levee road on a very foggy autumn morning. You may recall that my previous photograph of a fog-obscured tree from this location was in color — thought just barely, as I wrote about in that post. Color was similarly subtle (as in “nearly absent”) in this scene, too, so I went ahead and interpreted the scene in black and white.

The quiet and moody quality of this scene, of course, comes largely from the tule fog. But that is enhanced by the way it glows in the back light from the sun, seen just above and slightly to the left of the tree. The fog is very thick here, but not very deep, and even though visibility was probably little more than 100 feet, the sunlight was able to penetrate and light up the fog.

Morning mist along the steep headlands cliffs of the rugged Big Sur region.

Earlier this week I made a quick trip down the coast to the Big Sur region, getting as far south as Sur Point. This is a short enough drive for me that I can leave home early, photograph all morning, and be home for a late lunch. The conditions can vary greatly at this time of year. Often it is sunny and clear, as it was on this visit, but it can also be foggy and cold. When a big Pacific front rolls through, watch out —huge waves roll in and landslides can close the coast highway. One thing I did not have was the all-too-common summer crowds —a late fall weekday morning is not crowded at all.

The photograph includes a familiar section of the Big Sur coast, and it is visible from another well-known icon. (I think I did all that I could do with that famous subject years ago… and now this nearby terrain interests me more.) Here the road rises to a high point, and tall cliffs drop abruptly to the ocean from the tall bluffs. A bit of fog and mist softened the morning light.

With the Washburn fire in the news, many of us have been thinking about that fire, the fact that the Mariposa Grove has been in its path, the recent destruction of a significant percentage of Southern Sierra sequoias, the role of fire in forest life, and the changes wrought by human-caused climate change. This grove, along with almost all Sierra forests, has a symbiotic relationship with periodic wildfires. A disruption of that cycle — either through complete suppression or the resultant hot and destructive fires that feed on too much undergrowth, enhanced by the changing climate — is dangerous to the long-term health of forests.

Figuring out how to feel about wildfires is complicated. If you were brought up on Smokey the Bear telling us that all fires are bad, it was a revelation to later learn that this isn’t the whole truth. More recently, as we were coming to terms with the idea that fire plays a role in forest health, Sierra fires have become more frequent, larger, and far more destructive. The duration of the fire season is expanding, and the forests are being so badly damaged that some seem to not be coming back.
