Back from the Eastern Sierra

Just back this Saturday evening (hey, looks like it is now Sunday morning) from a five-day trip to the eastern Sierra. This was a trip that almost didn’t happen, and actually did not happen according to the original plan. We originally planned a week-long pack trip into the upper Kern River basin, but those plans were scrapped at the last moment due to a variety of circumstances. Instead a group of three of us dialed back our plans and came up with a shorter trip to the lakes of Sabrina Basin. However, the night before I cracked a tooth! Fortunately, I have a cooperative dentist, and he saw me first thing in the morning on the day I was to leave. I’ll spare you all the dental details, but suffice it to say that he patched things up enough that I was on the road at 2:30 p.m. to rendezvous with my hiking partners at the Four Jeffrey campground that night at 9:00 p.m.

The next morning we headed up the trail out of Sabrina Lake and over the next four days we managed to visit a whole series of alpine lakes: Blue, Topsy Turvy, Sailor, Midnight, Moonlight, and a few others. We had some slightly challenging conditions when an unusual weather system passed over the northern Sierra, bringing rather high winds and colder than usual temperatures throughout the range. On the plus side, the cold seemed to suppress the mosquitoes – and we had a rare conjunction of peak wildflowers and few mosquitoes.

There are still some earlier photos in the queue, but photographs from this trip should start to show up here in the next week or so.

Clearing Storm, Carson Peak and Grant Lake

Clearning Storm, Carson Peak and Grant Lake

A late spring storm clears from the summit of Carson Peak above Grant Lake along the June Lakes Loop, California.

I’ll start by saying that I hope I have identified this peak correctly. I did not know its name when I made the photograph, and I think I’ve lined it up with the other geographic features on my map correctly – but if any one has a different ID on this peak please let me know.

I came to Grant Lake (which is actually, and obviously, a reservoir) from the back route, arriving by way of some dirt roads coming in from highway 395. I arrived at the dam and followed the road across, stopping in the middle to make some photographs when I saw this late light on the lake and shoreline with the peak gradually emerging from the remnants of this late-spring storm.

First Light, Mount Gibbs

First Light, Mount Gibbs

First morning light shines across the face of Mt. Gibbs above Tioga Pass, Yosemite National Park, California.

This photograph was made in the early morning alongside Tioga Meadow, the large meadow just below Tioga Pass inside the eastern boundary of Yosemite National Park, as the first sun crept over the Sierra crest and began to hit the upper slopes of Mt. Gibbs. This is one of my favorite locations along Tioga Pass Road, probably because it is the highest area right at the pass but also because of the extensive rolling meadows containing the skeletons of trees knocked down by avalanches and because of the proximity to much higher peaks, such as Mt. Dana.

Meltwater Pond and Grasses, Mount Gibbs and Kuna Crest, Tuolumne Meadows

Evening sky is reflected in a meltwater pond at the edge of a Tuolumne Meadows with Mount Gibbs and the Kuna Crest beyond, Yosemite National Park, California.

A rather peaceful evening scene, again at the seasonal runoff ponds near the west end of Tuolumne Meadows on and early July evening. I’m always intrigued by the patterns that the partially submerged meadow grasses make in these ponds, and here in the way they interrupt the sky reflected in the surface of the pond. On this evening I was also struck by the unusual coloration of the clouds about the summit of Mt Gibbs (at the left) and Mammoth Peak and barely-sunlit Kuna Crest in the center and right half of the frame.
