Patterns of earth, water flow, and salt deposits in Badwater Basin, Death Valley.

In a roundabout way, this photograph is the result of last-minute changes to my plans during my recent Death Valley visit, changes necessitated by the closure of other places I intended to visit there. I took advantage of this situation by more carefully exploring some popular (and some less popular) locations in my central portions of the park. And that led to me being being at Dantes View on a rather cold evening. This is a location with some rather remarkable views, stretching from distant Sierra peaks to mountains near Las Vegas.

I arrived while there was still direct light on the salt flats and other features in Death Valley, and then I continued to photograph right on through sunset until early dusk. I made this photograph was the sun-shadow line was just passing over this area of salt deposits in, more or less, Badwater Basin. From Dantes View, more than 5000′ above Death Valley, these features look quite different than what we see when we are among them, and I used a long lens to isolate interesting sections of this otherworldly landscape.

Green Door, Evening

A weathered green door, a green wall, a sidewalk — evening light.

First, a brief description of the photography, and then another reason that I am posting it today. I made the photograph on one of my daily walks — I try to get out and cover various routes in a radius of a couple of miles or so that add up to between 3 and 5 miles on a typical day. I always carry a camera, even though I don’t take it out on most of the walks. I’ve been past this old building quite a few times, but today I saw this door for the first time, so I stopped to photograph its worn and tilting form.

The other reason this photograph is here is that it comes from what is for me a photography tradition: the process of getting up to speed on a new camera. I usually avoid upgrading cameras too frequently. There are many reasons, but one is that I depend upon knowing a camera’s interface to the point where operation is intuitive. But eventually I do get new cameras. This was the first walk with the new Fujifilm XT5, which is going to replace the (fine) XPro2 that I’ve been using since that camera was introduced. I won’t go into the technical details at this point, but so far I’m liking the camera a lot.

Autumn Evening, Near Franconia

Evening light comes to a broad valley near Franconia, New Hampshire.

This photograph resulted from more than a little serendipity. Earlier we had gone to photograph a nearby area that was on our list of places to see. That led to a detour up a few side roads, all of which took a bit more time than we anticipated. We finished there and moved on, but it was clear that evening was coming soon, and it made sense to find a nearby area to photograph rather than racing to a more distant location.

At about that time we spotted another side road with a sign suggesting a trailhead and a view — so we took it and ended up at a parking lot at the end of the short road. The colors in the area were spectacular, but the light wasn’t yet quite what we had in mind, so we wandered down the trail a bit. Soon I spotted the little bed of white flowers in the dry meadow, and as I thought about how to photograph it I wondered if I could include it and a view of the broad valley beyond. It turned out that there was one camera position that would work, and this is the result, a photograph made just as the light was beginning to suggest evening.

Late-Season Aspens, Evening

Late-season aspen groves in the early-evening shadow of the Sierra crest.

The light for this photograph was special. I was east of the Sierra crest at an elevation of 8000′ or so. The sun had just dropped below the crest, and the direct sunlight was gone. However, clouds above the peaks were still directly lit by the sun and quite bright. As a result I worked in soft shadow light, but the trees were still gently backlit by those glowing clouds. This gave more directionality to the light than might have otherwise been the case, and this soft backlight enhanced the colors of the trees.

This location is one of the more fascinating and unusual in the range, though it is easy to overlook what makes it so. While the crest rises high to the west, here the terrain is on a boundary between high desert sagebrush country and the start of foliage that is more characteristic of the mountains. I think that the east side location, with its relatively less moisture, has a great effect on this. While I tend to think of aspens as mountain trees — and they often are — here there are many growing in terrain that is more desert-like.
