Death Valley National Park is landscape on the gigantic scale and a landscape of extremes. Elevations range from below sea level to over 11,000′ At the right time of year you can stand in 90 degree or hotter temperatures in the lowest place and look up to see snow on the highest peaks. It is well-known that the heat and aridity are extreme. The scale of the place is stupendous. When I first traveled in the park it reminded me, perhaps in a surprising way, of monumental landscapes that I had seen in The Yukon and Alaska, where the land seems to go on farther than one can see. Because there is so little vegetation, the geology of this desert landscape is laid bare, and rugged strata are easy to see.

But there are also surprises right underfoot. At the right time during the right years (and this photo was not made at such a time) small plants and wildflowers emerge and insects and other small critters can be seen. Some of these intimate landscape scenes seem more mundane, but they also tell stories worth hearing. This small patch of earth is at the base of some small, eroded hills along the east side of Death Valley where I have stopped from time to time. It is not an obviously special place – there is no parking lot or sign. The first time I went there to photograph in the evening I looked down and noticed the dense collection of multi-colored rocks, dead plants, and sand, and now when I go back there I seem to always end up looking for the same thing. The curving bit of dried wood was once a plant eking to a life at the edge of the main valley. These rocks are likely evidence of the surprising role that water plays in the formation of this landscape, having been washed down from those various strata and formation high in the Amargosa Range, leaving traces of blue, pink, purple, tan, and green minerals. And below and mixed in with all of this is the omnipresent sand, deposited and moved to and fro by Valley winds.

Morning sun strikes a rocky peninsula in a subalpine Sierra Nevada lake, Kings Canyon National Park

This is another photograph from last September’s nine-day photography sojourn into the high Sierra backcountry of Kings Canyon National Park with three photographer friends. We traveled to a remote 11,000′ basin, where we set up camp and photographed for nearly a week, coming to intimately know the surrounding landscape of lakes, streams, granite, trees, and the changing conditions of atmosphere and light which varied with the weather and the time of day. By spending time in such a place you have the opportunity to look beyond the first impressions of towering granite peaks and immense vistas and to begin to seem more of the smaller details that form the fabric this high country world.

On one of my morning walks in the surrounding terrain I visited a nearby basin full of lakes ranging in size from tiny pools and tarns to quite large lakes filling the basins scooped out by ancient glaciers. This basin is almost surrounded by nearby tall peaks and ridges, though it is open to the north-east as well. Due to these high walls, the sun does not penetrate down to its lowest levels at sunrise, but instead shows up over an extended period as the sun tops nearby ridges and the sun-shadow line traverses the valley. This portion of the lake in the photograph lies against more or less the south side of the valley, where a large and rocky slope ascends toward a ridge that shades the area much later in the morning. At the moment I made this photograph, the sun had reached the thin peninsula of rock in the foreground but the more distant rocks are illuminated by light reflected from other faces nearby.

A last beam of light slants across rippled sand dunes and a few desert plants, Death Valley National Park

After a long day of driving and photographing along a back-country road in Death Valley National Park, I finally made it back to my campground in the mid-afternoon. (You might wonder how I can claim a “long day” when I finished in the mid afternoon – something about starting a couple of hours before dawn in temperatures in the teens!) I took a short break and did a few camp chores, and then it was time to head out once again for an evening shoot. I decided to make it something fairly simple that wouldn’t require a lot of travel, so I ended up at some dunes just before sunset.

While I’m not unwilling to shoot big, long views of dunes – sometimes they are quite impressive! – more often I focus on some smaller aspect of them, and I really like looking very closely when I can. One of the great things about focusing on the small details is that once you start to see them you find them everywhere – even in places that you might not think are all that spectacular. As I walked out into the dunes, with only a general sense of where I wanted to go, it was not long at all before I started noticing all sorts of subjects in the long shadows and warm light of the oncoming evening. Many subjects, such as this one, are illuminated by extremely transient light – slanting at a low angle across the tops of dunes and momentarily catching a plant or a bit of dune texture. I probably had little more than a minute to work with this subject and then the light disappeared – and I quickly found another similar subject and then another and so on until the light finally was gone.

Brilliant morning light shines on subalpine trees and receding granite ridges, Kings Canyon National Park

Back in September of 2013 a group of four photographers headed off into the backcountry of the Kings Canyon National Park Sierra Nevada for nine days. (It occurred to me today that between the four of us, we have well over a century of experience in these mountains!) We crossed a Sierra crest pass at close to 12,000′ feet, another non-crest pass that was even higher, and then landed in a lake-filled basin where we set up camp at 11,000′ for most of a week. This basin is off the main through trails and the trails that do go here essentially dead-end, so there aren’t a lot of visitors here. Because we remained in one spot we were able to get to know the landscape more intimately, looking more closely at places we might have missed if we had just been passing by on the trail, and returning to photographic subjects more than once in changing conditions and light.

Up the valley from our camp was a series of sub-alpine lakes, surrounded by the quintessential High Sierra landscape of glaciated granite, tiny meadows, small trees, and ponds and lakes. I developed an almost daily loop up towards the upper lake, coming and going by different paths, and I began to get a better sense of the personality of this place. I made this photograph by climbing up a granite spine to a high point where the terrain flattened a bit and afforded a view of the surrounding valley. This photograph was made in the morning, when low angle light was streaming across the top of the farther ridge and backlighting the trees in front of me.
