Lake, Mountains, and Autumn Aspens

Lake., Mountains, and Autumn Aspens
“Lake, Mountains, and Autumn Aspens” — Colorful autumn aspen trees line the shoreline of an Eastern Sierra lake.

This photograph comes from a popular spot in the Eastern Sierra, along a road that loops out from US 395 south of Lee Vining. While the general area is not my favorite location for photographing fall color, there’s no denying that there are some pretty spectacular vistas here, including along the shore of this lake, a place popular with anglers and people camped at a nearby RV resort. But those trees! And those mountains!

Thinking of this place brings to mind once again the variations in autumn color in the eastern Sierra. This location, being at a somewhat lower elevation and perhaps because it is more affected by high desert climate, tends to see the colors arrive a bit later in the season. Knowing that, as I was starting a long drive back to the Bay Area I swung through here to take a final look before continuing on.

Signs of Autumn, Manhattan

Signs of Autumn, Manhattan
“Signs of Autumn, Manhattan” — Autumn colors and fallen leaves along a pathway in Manhattan.

I don’t know how many of you (who view these posts at my website) pay attention to the “categories” listings. They group the posts by their subject and focus, and the photographic posts always include the categories appropriate to their subjects — they might be “nature,” or “New York City,” or “Fall,” and so on. This photograph fits into a rather broad set of them, including those listed in the previous sentence and more. Yes, it is a fall nature photograph from New York City!

There’s little to suggest this location (unless you look very closely) but I made this photograph while walking along the High Line Park on the west side of Manhattan. When I’m in NYC I typically photograph obviously urban subjects — people, buildings, streets, and so forth. But in one section of this urban trail there were big piles of lovely autumn leaves, fallen from trees planted along the elevated walkway.

Evening Shadow

Evening Shadow
“Evening Shadow” — Evening shadows work their way up the face of a Sierra Nevada ridge, John Muir Wilderness.

This is one of the best times of the day in the backcountry — when the shadows lengthen and fall across the landscape, with nightfall inevitably not far behind. On typical evenings, everything slows down as the winds die and it becomes very quiet — a kind of deep quiet never experienced in our city lives. The light turns golden and we stop to watch the colors on peaks, knowing that the day is almost over.

Our group of photographers was camped in a high Sierra basin for a week a few years ago. By this evening we had adapted completely into the rituals and slower time of the backcountry, and as the quiet evening approached we set about slowly looking for a few last photographs.

At Tree Line

At Tree Line
“At Tree Line” — The final small trees give way to meadows and granite at tree line, Sierra Nevada.

On occasion I have been asked about my favorite places in the Sierra Nevada, the range I have wandered for decades. I do have specific favorite locations, but I often answer more generally: it is the country right at the tree line, where the terrain opens up, the highest peaks are visible, there is (usually) water everywhere, and where one can freely wander without trails, constrained only by technical skills, terrain, endurance, and imagination. To me, this IS the embodiment of the “range of light.”

The place in the photograph is a fine example of what I refer to. We were camped at a lower elevation among trees and near a lake. But we could see all the way up this long, open valley with small trees, scattered meadows, and a lovely creek. I walked up it several times during our stay. As I ascended the trees began to thin and the meadows, soggy in places, took over. I made the photograph in the region of the last trees, and then I kept going toward the base of the talus slopes in the distant shadows.
