Fall colors in an aspen grove along the east slope of the Sierra Nevada.

I hope you’ll pardon me for reverting to the Eastern Sierra fall color theme over the next few weeks. It is that time of year again. (For those of you seeing this photograph and wondering if you just missed this year’s color — this photograph comes from a pervious year.) While I have not been up there recently (soon, I hope!) to see how things are coming along, I’ve heard rumors of folks seeing early color more or less on schedule. We’re still roughly two weeks from what I think of as the start of the core aspen color season, starting in early October and generally lasting through the third week or so.

This scene holds a lot of what I look for in the Eastern Sierra in the fall. There are several sub-groves of aspens running across the scene — you can see them by their different phases in the color transition. Here we also see something that you don’t see everywhere in the Sierra, namely rather tall and straight trees. There is a bit of color from some non-aspen brush in the foreground, in the case of this location because it is at the edge of high sage brush country.

If you have been following along here you probably can guess that this is another photograph from my (almost) daily long walks in the greater neighborhood, an activity that has become a ritual during the time since March 2020… for reasons that you can also probably guess. These walks range from the short (“Gotta at least put in a half hour!”) to nearly ten miles, virtually always through the urban wilderness of neighborhoods, industrial areas, shopping centers, and similar.

I always carry a camera, though on most walks it stays in the bag. But every so often something catches my attention and out comes the camera. Quite often the subject is something that I’ve passed by many times but only really notice for the first time on one of the walks — a common experience, by the way. The elements that make this building what it is comprise quite a collection — the heavy framing of the entry way, the rather striking and perhaps unusual color choices, and more… some of which lies outside the frame in this photograph.

Inscriptions and hardware on the of a small building in a Bavarian forest.

Some years back when we visited Europe we managed to meet up with a big group of extended family members near Berchtesgaden, Bavaria, where we rented a big farm house (or so it seemed to us) for a week. In addition to doing all the usual family stuff, we visited a number of nearby sights, from some in Bavaria to the not-too-distance city of Salzburg, Austria.

Königsee, part of the Berchtesgaden National Park was very close by, so we took that famous electric boats up the lake to the landing at Kirsche St. Bartholoma. It was a nice day so we decided to take a hike to the Eiskapelle, a place at the base of a gigantic ice chute coming from the upper reaches of Watzmann, the highest peak in the neighborhood. Along the way we passed this small building, which I think may be a chapel of some sort, and I was intrigued by the rustic metal fittings, the many carvings, and the color.

Wetlands, Winter Sunset Sky

Clouds from an approaching winter weather system above Central Valley wetlands at sunset.

Who can resist a winter sunset sky, a reflecting pond, a few bits of vegetation, and distant mountains? I know I cannot. Recently I have written about sunsets several times — once to describe one that surprised me at the end of a rather gray day and another that, well, stayed gray. On both of those occasions I had little idea about how the sunset would turn out, but I stuck around just to see what, if anything, might develop. This time the event was almost predictable. The front edges of a Pacific weather front was approaching, and the line of clouds had been visible for a couple of hours. I almost hate to admit it, but I showed up in this spot only above five minutes before sunset.

In addition to their colorful attractions, sunsets like this one speak to Californians in an additional way right now. It has been (again!) a very dry start to our wet season, and after too many recent drought years we are getting a bad feeling about this winter. So these clouds, signaling something other than more “perfect” blue sky weather, are exciting in their promise of the potential for rain.
