On one hand, this is a pleasant enough scene. I had headed to the California coast just north of Santa Cruz for the morning. This is one of the closest coastal locations to me, and I can be in sight o the ocean in a bit over a half hour or so. It was a typical late-spring coastal morning, with thick fog around the peaks as I drove over, and “high fog” (aka “low clouds”) all along the coast. The fog breaks up first over land, and along the this edge of the fog there is often lovely light — mixed sun and shadow, misty atmosphere, and a general soft glow. The bucolic little farm sits against the base of coastal hills, on a flat area near small lagoons.

But there’s something else in this photograph that you may have noticed if you looked closely. That far, upper ridge should be shrouded in forest trees… not the bare, skeletal remains of trees destroyed by last year’s wildfires in the Big Basin region. As a Californian, I’m used to the late-summer and early-autumn wildfire season. In the past decade or so, however, it has become worse and more widespread as the combination of unusual heat and drought have stressed the landscape. This past fire season all kinds of places burned where don’t usually expect to see such huge fires, including locations like this one where the charred forests extend to within sight of the ocean, and in a few cases all the way to it.

There’s nothing like have the time for a slow morning wandering the perimeter of a forest-lined Yosemite backcountry lake. We camped at this one for something like four nights back in 2014, when a group of us spent a week in the high country making photographs. Each morning, well before sunrise, it was down to the shoreline wander and photograph.

I love photographs of trees in back-light, but there are some challenges. The obvious one, of course, is that you are pretty much guaranteed to be shooting almost directly into the sun. But second challenge is that the scene between camera position and subject is often in the bright sunlight, even if the background is pleasantly shaded. Photographing on a lake can help with this issue since the water helpfully reflects that shaded background and is hardly affected at all by the direct light, aside from a bit of extra illumination of anything that happens to be floating on the water.

For the most part I avoided tourist-popular places during my recent visit to Death Valley. However, I confess that I did camp in a well-known parking lot, uh, I mean campground for one night so that I could be closer to sand dunes. On that evening and again the following morning I headed out to some places along the edges and back of the dune fields to photograph this always-fascinating subject.

This photograph comes from the evening shoot, for which I headed to a spot where I find sequences of receding dune crests that are perpendicular to the setting sun. I aimed almost exactly in the direction of the sun just as it was about to drop behind mountains, and I performed some gymnastics in order to shade the lens and minimize flare. On a technical note, this subject provided the opportunity to use a special setup — a medium format zoom lens attached to my full frame camera using an adapter that provides tilt and shift adjustments.

Sunlight begins to thin the morning fog in a Monterey Peninsula forest.

Today we visit the California coast below the Monterey Peninsula, at the Point Lobos State Reserve. (That is the actual name, though many of us casually refer to it as a state “park.”) I have gone to this place for decades, since my parents took us there as kids. Back then the big attractions were the tide pools (the number one attraction!), the various sea mammals, and the surf. Those are still on my list when I go there, though now I’m more likely to go with the goal of making photographs. (The place, like so much of the Big Sur coast, has become almost impossibly popular, so I try to visit at odd, off-peak times.)

I had gone down there on this 2013 early spring day to make photographs. My typical routine is to arrive very early, before those crowds show up, and spend a few hours photographing in relative quiet. This time I headed to a location in the more northerly portion of the small preserve, where there are views back across the coastal forests and toward the low hills to the east. Because it was morning, the sun was coming over those hills just as the fog was starting to then, allowing a bit more light into the gaps between the trees.
