The view looking straight upwards at the vault of the Salzburg Cathedral.

As an American — a citizen of a relatively young country — I still am amazed by what you can just sort of wander into in Europe, sometimes without even intending to go to such places. (I have stories, and they range from hilarious to marvelous.) In a way, our visit to the Salzburg Cathedral was a bit like this. We were staying in Bavaria with family for a week, and we arrived and departed by trains in Salzburg. And since we were just over the border, it was a short drive back there to spend some time wandering around.

And wander is more or less how we ended up in this cathedral. We parked and started walking toward the central area of the old city and passed by this Cathedral and, of course, walked in. (Speaking of casual amazements — you can still see where Mozart was baptized in this church.) The photograph looks straight up at the remarkable ceiling of this 400-hundred-year-old church.

Four closely-spaced Ross’s geese in flight above the California Central Valley.

This is a somewhat straightforward photograph of a small group of Ross’s geese in flight over California’s Central Valley. I made the photograph on a cold January morning back in 2013… which is the sort of thing you might find me doing on January mornings in just about any year.

I often try for some kind of landscape context with these bird photographs, or perhaps some unusual light or color or atmosphere. But this photograph is pretty straightforward — just four geese against the winter sky. One thing I like about it has to do with the positions of the four birds. You can press the shutter a whole lot of times as geese fly by before you get a photograph where four of the birds stand out this clearly and are this visible.

A pair of legs, a low brick wall, and a sidewalk, London.

As I prepared this photograph for posting I got a tune stuck in my ear — the proverbial ear worm. Sorry for sharing it, but the (slightly modified) lyrics would be: “London legs are falling down, falling down, falling down…” Not sorry enough?

This is another photograph that belongs to the category called, “it might be hard to explain this.” Let’s just call it street photograph, since that’s what it is. I think it is more about geometry than anything else, perhaps.

A Break at Nelson’s Column

Two young men taking a break on a ledge, Nelson’s Column, London.

Before I began my recent string of Sierra Nevada photographs — unearthed, recovered, rediscovered for another project — I was sharing photographs from a trip to the UK and Europe nearly a decade ago. I had shared some work from Germany, Austria, and London… but I had not completed the sharing of all of that work. Starting with his photograph, I’m going to begin to work my way through a bit more of that backlog.

During this London visit we did many of the usual London things. (Though we also do not always operate in the usual way of travelers — for example, rather than deciding ahead of time what to see we often set out blindly in new places to discover unexpected things.) In any case, one of those things one must do is visit Trafalgar Square, the location of Nelson’s Column. When we were there, a lot of people were using the lower portion of the structure as a place to sit and perhaps have a snack… and these two fellows had found special perch just a higher than the rest.
