Colorful trees arranged around San Joaquin Valley wetlands under autumn sky with clearing fog

When I have written about some of the previous photographs of these San Joaquin Valley areas, where I go to photograph birds in the late fall and winter, I have described the cycle of my earlier mornings in such places: awake hours before sunrise, a two-hour drive in the dark, frequent arrival in thick tule fog, the first sound of birds after I stop my car and get out, the sensations related to photographing in the cold and foggy morning, the first light, sunrise. This photograph comes from a bit later in the morning, closer to the time when the rapidly changing early morning conditions stabilize and things begin to seem more static.

On this morning there had been some of the usual tule fog at daybreak. I photographed in those conditions for the first hour or two, but by 8:00 the fog was mostly gone and all that remained of it was the common Central Valley winter haze. Above that was the huge expanse of sky that I’m often aware of here — sky stretching unbroken from the low hills in the west to the distance Sierra Nevada crest far to the east. By this time the birds were generally much less active and the quick pace of the sunrise hours gave way to the slow, still quality of the midday hours.

A Reflection

A Reflection

I think this photograph is more fun if I avoid saying too much about it. I will say that it actually is a photograph, and one with no more post processing work than I might apply in, say, a landscape photograph. I made the photograph while out on the street in San Francisco earlier this week, doing night photography with my friends and fellow photographers of Studio Nocturne SF.

And that’s all I’m going to write…

Late each fall I begin heading out into California’s Great Central Valley to photograph migratory birds and the winter (plus a bit of autumn) landscape of this place. That landscape is largely agricultural, but Americans had enough foresight in the past — and one hopes we’ll return to those roots again soon — to put aside many areas in this midst of these areas for the use of birds, largely migratory birds who spend their summers thousand of miles to the north and then magically appear in my neighborhood during the colder months. Here, under the Central Valley’s open sky (often obscured by tule fog at this time of year!) I find cranes, herons, ibises, geese, egrets, hawks, eagles, and more.

Yesterday I made my first real bird photography foray of the new season. As usual, I was up and on the road many hours before dawn, arriving at my destination a half hour before sunrise to find the place socked in by tule fog so thick that bird photography wasn’t really possible at first. I took my time, slowing down to synchronize with the less-hectic flow of time here, and a bit later in the day came upon a group of ibises feeding near the edge of a pond. The coloration of ibises used to confuse me. Guides show everything from nearly black to quite colorful, but the first time I saw these birds they looked dark and, to be honest, somewhat drab. However, as this photograph shows, in the right light their feathers can produce a wild array of color including red, blue, green, yellow and more.

Reflection of a couple posing for a selfie, Whitney Museum, Manhattan

I made this photograph when we visited the Whitney Museum on a trip to New York City earlier this year — the new version of the Whitney located in Chelsea near the end of The High Line Park. We were there at least partly to see the Calder exhibit, but also because we like the Whitney itself. I not only like the place (and this is true of other museums I visit) for the work that is exhibited, but also for the photographic opportunities. There are lots of people to see, and this museum incorporates all kinds of other interesting visual opportunities: the architecture of the building, the outside terraces, the views of the surrounding areas.

I made this photograph on one of the outdoor terraces on an upper floor. The terraces provide open views of Manhattan, and they house large works that display well in outdoor spaces. There are always lots of people passing through these spaces, and this couple stopped to make a selfie photo against one of the sculptures, inadvertently positioning themselves where their reflection also incorporated a slightly distorted view of the Manhattan surroundings. The subject of “selfies” is a big one on its own, and I won’t try to take that on in its entirely here. However, people making these photographs of themselves sometimes seem to let down their guard as they temporarily become almost oblivious to their surroundings and they often assemble into interesting group poses.
