During a break in California’s string of atmospheric river storms I managed to make a quick trip to the upper Big Sur coast this week. It is quite a scene there right now with numerous flooded areas, downed trees, washouts, slides, and closed roadways. This also means, of course, that the usual crowds are absent, so it was a fine time to go, even if some places I like to visit were off limits. (State parks were closed, and the lower half of the route was completely shut down.)

I stopped at this location, a spot where I have photographed for years, though this time I chose to make a photograph that focuses on something other than the obvious subject at this location. (That “obvious subject” may be just barely visible if you know where to look.) Often when I photograph in this spot I try to avoid including this lovely grove of big old trees and the meadow at its base, but they became the main subject in this photograph.

Every time I visit the Big Sur coast — which I’ve been doing for decades — I manage to find something new. Sometimes it is just a different view on something that I’ve seen before — perhaps a different sort of light, unusual conditions of surf or weather, or a slightly different vantage point. Occasionally it is something that I did not know about — an obscure overlook, a juxtaposition of landscape elements, and so forth.

This location falls between those extremes. I have stopped to photograph this general area quite a few times. But there are innumerable little access points and foot paths that head out along the edge of the coastal bluffs, and this time I took one that I’ve seen many times but never followed. It took me to this overlook above a small cove backed by a series of small ridges running down to the waterline, with a taller hill in the distance.

Morning mist along the steep headlands cliffs of the rugged Big Sur region.

Earlier this week I made a quick trip down the coast to the Big Sur region, getting as far south as Sur Point. This is a short enough drive for me that I can leave home early, photograph all morning, and be home for a late lunch. The conditions can vary greatly at this time of year. Often it is sunny and clear, as it was on this visit, but it can also be foggy and cold. When a big Pacific front rolls through, watch out —huge waves roll in and landslides can close the coast highway. One thing I did not have was the all-too-common summer crowds —a late fall weekday morning is not crowded at all.

The photograph includes a familiar section of the Big Sur coast, and it is visible from another well-known icon. (I think I did all that I could do with that famous subject years ago… and now this nearby terrain interests me more.) Here the road rises to a high point, and tall cliffs drop abruptly to the ocean from the tall bluffs. A bit of fog and mist softened the morning light.

Unless you look closely, you might not see this as an autumn photograph, but the evidence is there. The most obvious indication is in the canyon that descends from the right of the tall peak, Basin Mountain. Just beneath the lip below the dark canyon you can spot a batch of very colorful aspen trees following the drainage into the valley below. There are some other subtle clues, too. The general golden-brown color of vegetation, including that in the high desert hills in the foreground, is typical of fall. Even more subtle is something in the quality of the light and atmosphere… which is what provoked me to detour to make this photograph.

I’ve long been intrigued by Basin Mountain, which rises to the Sierra Crest west of Bishop, California. From the east, the face of the peak is marked by a striking “basin,” and some interesting old trails switchback across its lower face. I’ve wondered what is in that basin, but I’ve never found the time to go up there. I would not typically make a photograph of such a subject at this time of day — late morning. The east side of the Sierra is often in less-than-lovely light at this time, especially if there is haze. But on this day there was merely enough haze to make things interesting, while higher clouds softened the light. So I detoured away from the start of my homeward drive to follow some backroads to this camera position where I could include the foreground hills and the peak.
