Burned Pines, Mono Basin

Burned Ponderosa Pines, Mono Basin
“Burned Pines, Mono Basin” — Burned trees near the end of a giant pine forest, Mono Basin.

This desolate scene is along the fringes of Mono Basin, the large valley holding Mono Lake. It is just east of the Sierra Nevada, but it is a very “un-Sierra-like” place, being dry sagebrush country for the most part. The photograph looks past a sparse forest of dead snags and in the direction of Mono Lake itself.

There is a vast pine forest near here, stretching over nearby mountains toward Mono Lake. Most of it appears to be quite healthy, and it features open forest with space between the trees and lots of light. However, at some point in the past a wildfire swept through part of it and left behind many dead trees, including these that used to make the very edge of the forest.

Levee Road and Tree

My plan was to photograph birds migratory birds on this foggy Central Valley morning. But the fog was so thick when I arrived that I couldn’t even seen the birds. And then, as the fog began to thin, the light was so beautiful — and the birds still so scarce — that I ended up mostly making landscape photographs. I made this one when the shallow fog had cleared enough to reveal the early morning sky, even though the fog bank still covered the landscape beyond the levee road and tree.

I visit this place often at this time of year — a rather nondescript part of the Central Valley. It isn’t just that it’s not the sort of place you would notice as you drove past — it is so far off the beaten track that the odds are you would never even go there. But after years of poking around here I have come to love the landscape, especially on foggy winter mornings like this.

The skeletal remains of a stand of ponderosa pine trees under blue high desert sky, Mono Basin.

This photograph comes from my short trip to the area near Tioga Pass in Yosemite during the final days of summer — a trip to reacquaint myself with the Sierra after missing the entire summer up there. I camped near the crest where I could easily enter the park or head east and visit the eastern escarpment of the range and some of the nearby high desert terrain.

I made this photograph on a morning when I headed east, passing Mono Lake and continuing a bit further, then turning off the main road to drive along the edge of a huge ponderosa pine forest. At some point in the past a wildfire burned though here, and the skeletal burned trees have long fascinated me. These trees are right at the (former) edge of the grove, and Mono Lake and desert mountains are barely visible in the distance.

Morning Clouds, Dormant Tree

Morning sky filled with blue clouds behind a winter-dormant tree, Central Valley, California.

This photograph is from New Yea’s Day morning, when a small group of us met in a wild place to photograph birds and, a bit later, to break out goodies and champagne to toast the arrival of 2023. The day was a rousing social success… which made up for the overall less-than-thrilling photographic conditions. It was far from a “bust,” but moments of good light were separated by many more with gray skies and wind.

This complex tree is an “old friend” of mine — a tree that I see many times each year. Every time I pass I think about how to photograph it and realize that it isn’t an easy subject! My most successful efforts have been in fog, when details of the scene are muted and the background disappears. On this day I had some unusual colors and light to work with — the blue-toned sky and the more colorful breaks in the clouds.
