Green and pink painted brick walls in San Francisco, California.

Several things catch my eye about this little scene: the contrast between the sharply defined monochromatic green bricks on the left and the wildly pink and badly painted bricks on the right, the old light fixture with its small shadow, the almost completely black line in the middle of the image where the two buildings don’t quite meet, the sliver of blue sky near the top of this shadowed area, and the very stark and harsh light.

Rusty hinge on an old wooden garage door in the Mission District, San Francisco, California.

Finally, I think that this may really be the fine image in this series! The garage door with its weathered paint and rusty fixtures is in a small back alley in the Mission District of San Francisco, California.

Four pink apartment doors with steps and white columns in the Mission District, San Francisco, California.

Walking in an area like the Mission District, I begin to see many things that would otherwise completely escape my notice. Although I’m sure I’ve seen them before, I recently became away of the prevalence of these building entrances with rows of four nearly identical doorways – this must have been some sort of common building design in San Francisco at some point. Here, as is also fairly common, the colors chosen for the paint were a bit unusual.
