By this point I am quite familiar with this coastline below California’s Monterey Peninsula — I’ve been visiting almost continuously since I was a child and my parents took the family down there for day trips and rare overnights in Monterey. We went to Point Lobos all the time, where I spent days investigating tide pools and hiking trails along the shoreline.

All of this may partially be my way of explaining why I might make a photograph like this —not a typical “tourist shot” of the rugged Big Sur coast, but something much quieter. The fog is a near-constant presence here, often coming onshore and muting colors and light and condensing the visual world. When it isn’t over the land it is often just off shore — perhaps far enough out that you have to look for it or, as here, right along the shoreline. The edge of the fog bank can be a place of amazing light — dark in distance beneath the clouds and surprisingly bright along the edges and where beams of light reflect off the water.

My last real photographic expedition (aside from the ongoing neighborhood walks) was to more or less this place. That was more than three months ago now, back on March 13. I recall the trip well. In California we were in that phase where we knew what was coming, though no one had actually issued the state-at-home orders yet. I made a one-day out-and-back trip to one of my favorite winter locations, packing so that I would not have to stop at all on the road. This place was nearly deserted — most of the birds had even departed!

This photograph comes from a few years earlier, before virtually any of us could even conceive of how our lives have now changed. It was a wonderful winter day, and as it came to and end and the sun dropped behind the distant ridge to the west of the Central Valley, I photographed through this dense stand of trees.

Looking at this little group of colorful birds hanging out on utility lines against a backdrop of perfect blue sky, you might image that this is a summer scene, photographed on a warm June day. You would be wrong. I made this photograph on a very cold January morning out in California’s Central Valley.

The reason I was there, of course, was to photograph much bigger and more impressive birds — the annual winter migration of geese and cranes and lots of other birds that over-winter here. I had been photographing those subjects since before dawn, and as the morning wore on the migratory bird action was slowing down. I had stopped to look at some cranes, but I looked up to find these wonderful little birds.

Ah, to be in a place like this on a morning like this one right now! Unfortunately, that is not to be — and not just because long distance travel is still out of the question except in essential situations, but because it is no longer winter! I made the photograph on an early January day spent out in California’s Great Central Valley, searching after bird and landscape subjects. Now that I think of it, one might even say that this bird is… social distancing! Though, to be more accurate, it is other birds and smaller critters that are distancing from this hunter.

Doing photography — at least the kinds that I do — is a challenging proposition in the current situation. I do get out to walk in our urban/suburban neighborhood, and I carry a camera with me when I go. But I prefer to do my urban photography in busier and perhaps ab it grittier locations. For now, virtually all of my landscape subjects are off-limits, as they require travel over distances that are beyond what seems responsible right now. In the meantime, it turns out that among the tens of thousands of images in my raw file archive there are quite a few that seem worth revisiting!
