Back in early December, 2012 we were out photographing migratory birds in California’s Central Valley, on a day that began with extremely thick tule fog, gradually transitioned to hazy sunshine, then was interrupted by the atmospheric muck of an incoming weather system, and ended with a surprising and astonishing sunset and post-sunset display of color. It seems that there must have been a gap between the clouds and the horizon somewhere far to our west, and as the sun dropped to the horizon the late and very red light shone up into the clouds, turning them blood-red (and, at times, pink and purple and orange and more.)

Right before this we had been parked near a very large flock of geese that were mostly grounded, but which would occasionally take off en masse and circle for a bit before settling back in, often quite close to where they started. I had been tracking and photographing them in the somewhat gloomy light, and when the brilliantly colorful sky arrived I was ready to try to take advantage of it. This created a challenge though, that is probably familiar to anyone who has photographed such a sky. It is very bright and (important to those shooting digital systems) very red – which means that it can be necessary to underexpose a bit to avoid seeing very strange things happen to the red channel in the image file. In addition, since I was shooting straight into this brilliant light here, the geese were backlit. So, in post I was faced with a couple of contradictory issues – I had to control the brightness of the sky while trying to regain a bit of detail on the bodies of the backlit and rather dark birds! About the “blue geese, red sky” title… Because the dimmer light falling on the portions of the geese facing me was largely diffused light from a non-colorful (e.g. – blue) part of the sky, their white feathers registered very much as blue.

Sunset light momentarily illuminates coastal bluffs near Davenport, California

This photograph or one very much equivalent to it might have been made in any of perhaps thousands of locations along the California coastline, given the right time of year, the right atmospheric conditions, and the right light. With just a bit of looking around, these views from promontory bluffs, looking down the coastline past a series of other rugged bluffs are characteristic of the area. This spot happens to be near the small coastal town of Davenport, California just north of Santa Cruz.

The photograph illustrates one thing about my orientation to photographing the coast line and also illustrates something about light. About the coastline… my favorite times of the year on the coast are not the typical peak tourist season times, but instead are during the late fall through early spring period. Not only is coastal fog much less likely – though still possible! – but the ocean is more interesting and variable under the influence of winter weather, the potential for interesting skies is greater, and the generally lower-angle light creates all sorts of interesting possibilities. The clouds in this photograph, which glow just a bit in the momentary sunset light, are from a weak weather front that passed over during this afternoon along the coast. That weather front leads to my second point about light, which I’ll get to by way of telling part of the story of this afternoon’s photography. When I arrived at this location near the middle of the day, the light seemed very, very unpromising. It wasn’t just the usual nature of midday light, but there was a sort of bland haze in the air, and a shield of approaching clouds was coming down from the north – and as the afternoon wore on it became clear that those thick clouds were going to end up in front of the sun in the late afternoon.

However, sometimes the easiest and most predictable light is the least interesting to shoot in, and the least predictable and sometimes least-promising light can occasionally produce momentary wonders if you watch and are ready for them – or just have enough dumb luck to arrive at the right instant! (On the other hand, you can also watch and wait and, in the end, get… nothing. It goes with the territory!) In this case, I thought about two things. First, I thought about how I could photograph this “boring” light. The way I look at it, I’m there because the place, the circumstances, and the time are interesting – in which case there must be some way to produce a photograph in those conditions that reflect that. But that’s not my point with this particular photograph. The point that this one so nicely illustrates has to do with that possibility of momentary light on a day that seems unpromising. I ran into a couple of other photographers on the bluff during the “blah light” period. I wasn’t making photographs at that point, instead mostly just looking around. We talked briefly about the currently uninspiring light, but I pointed out that I thought I could see an edge to the cloud shield far off-shore, and if I was right there just might be a brief moment of special light as the sun passed below that edge and before it reached the horizon. Sure enough, with just a few minutes left before sunset, the sun dropped below the clouds and an intense band of extremely warm light began to suffuse the coastline against the backdrop of gray higher clouds. It lasted for only a minute or two, but that light was worth the wait.

We had anticipated the huge aspen groves on the flanks of Boulder Mountain as we approached on highway 12 from the west, having seen these trees earlier in the year, last April, when we crossed the mountain in spring before the new leaves appeared. We weren’t sure what we would find since, a) Boulder Mountain is high and b) we had seen high elevations aspens earlier during the trip that had almost completely lost their leaves. As we climbed toward the mountain from the town of Boulder, we began to encounter aspen color, but as we climbed it was apparent that we had missed the most colorful phase of this years transition.

That was OK, though. Even a bit pre- or post-peak, the aspen colors can still be spectacular. We stopped at the first place where we could see large aspen groves leading on up the incline toward the higher portions of the mountain and made some photographs. Then we continued on, rounding the shoulder of the mountain to find some very large and still quite colorful groves ahead of us. Although the light was starting to fade as the end of the day approached and as high clouds moved overhead, it seemed worthwhile to try to photograph these trees with a long lens. I continued shooting through sunset and soon the last direct sun left the trees and the more distant mountains. Here there is still a bit of light on the highest peaks to the east, seen faintly through the haze.

This view of the red rock formations at Cedar Breaks National Monument is from a different portion of the area than shown in the photograph I posted previously, and was made on a different day. Earlier I had photographed aspen color far below in an area of the Dixie National Forest, and when I finished there it seemed like there might be just enough time to swing by this overlook during the very last light of the day. One thing led to another – primarily photographic distractions, if I recall correctly – and when we arrived it was literally the last sunlight, and it was going fast.

By the time I got my gear together and walked out to the edge of the drop-off, the direct sun was pretty much gone, as a consequence of the late hour and of the clouds that were in the west. But sometimes the most beautiful light comes after the sun drops below the horizon, when features are lit by the soft yet colorful western sky and shadows are filled in by this more diffused light. Fortunately it wasn’t too windy – unlike the previous day when the winds were howling – so I was able to continue shooting into this evening light a bit before packing up and heading back to Brian Head.
