Black and white photograph of abstract rock patterns near Weston Beach at Point Lobos State Reserve.

This detail of the Point Lobos shoreline rocks was also photographed in an area just a bit north of Weston Cove where large rocks are lifted up at striking angles and the surf has worn away successive layers of sedimentary rock to reveal wild patterns. Some of the colors in this bit of rock were quite intense – the rock on the left is intensely reddish-brown in the original capture – and seemed to overwhelm the subtle patterns, especially those on the right side of the image.

I don’t know if it is apparent but this is a highly post-processed image. I don’t think it is necessary to spoil the fun by going into all of the gory details, but this image depends quite a bit on work in post.

Sidewalk and Steel Plates

Patterned steel plates criss-cross a sidewalk in San Francisco, California.

This pattern caught my attention as I walked behind the Ferry Building toward the waterfront – the plates apparently cover underground utilities of some sort. The odd angles and the glow of the diffused light from overhead fog created interesting patterns and texture. At first I thought of keeping this as a color image, but in the end the colors were so soft and so close to monochromatic that I decided to go with this version.

Melt-water pools in the frozen surface of a Sierra Nevada alpine lake reflect early evening clouds, Yosemite National Park, California.

This wonderful ice-covered lake provided me with a handful of photographs that I’m coming to like a great deal. We visited the lake, in the high-country of Yosemite National Park near the Sierra crest, on the evening of the second-to-last day in June. Because of the above-average precipitation of the previous winter and the wet, cold, and late spring storms, this lake was still almost completely covered with winter ice and the surrounding valley was snow-covered. However, the ice was well along in the melting process and the surface of the lake was covered with melt-water ponds holding water that took on the color of the sky. In this photograph the pools reflect some evening clouds that were passing near the peaks of the Sierra crest.

Evening cloud forms above the Pacific Ocean coastline near Davenport, California.

This is the second of a pair of abstract images of evening clouds that I photographed earlier this week along the California coastline north of Davenport. The photographs were shot with fairly long focal lengths and then converted to black and white in post, where additional modifications to the original images were also made.
