Morning light in the redwood forest at Muir Woods National Monument, California.

On a late October weekend when I had intended to photograph in Yosemite Valley, I instead ended up shooting at Muir Woods National Monument in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area north of San Francisco. I shoot here frequently – in fact, some of my photos are sold in the gift shop at the monument – and I’m working on building up a body of work representing a lot of different subjects at different times of the year and in varying conditions.

I often prefer to shoot there when there is overcast or even in fog or rainy conditions. However, on this morning it was sunny! This poses a real challenge when shooting in the redwood groves, since the shaded areas can be quite dark but where a beam of light finds its way to the forest floor or hits plants or trees it can be extremely bright, creating some very wide dynamic range conditions. In order to capture this – and create a photograph that suggests the way I saw the scene at the time of the exposure – I often combine two (and sometimes more) exposures in order to deal with this, which is what I did in this photograph.

Tioga Pass and Alternatives as Winter Approaches

Lots of us northern and central California photographers make trips to the eastern Sierra in the summer and fall – I know that many of you have been there in the past month to photograph aspens and other fall color. For many of us the standard route to the “east side” is through Yosemite National Park and over Tioga Pass on State Highway 120 to Lee Vining and the area near Mono Lake. From here it is a short drive south to Mammoth (about a half hour) and Bishop (an hour) and points south, including Big Pine, Independence, and Lone Pine.

As the fall season arrives and winter weather approaches, Tioga Pass becomes a less reliable route and eventually closes for the season. The seasonal closure typically occurs sometime in late October or in November, though the historical records show that it has happened as late as January 1! Early morning shopping for produce at the Big Star Grocery Co. in Chinatown, San Francisco, California.

In the past I’ve mostly walked past these markets in San Francisco’s Chinatown at more typical tourist times of the day, so I had missed the activity of the early morning hours when the markets are both opening and taking shipments of produce, dropped off on the sidewalks by large delivery trucks and then moved inside manually.

An odd juxtapostion of signs on a street kiosk in San Francisco, California.

Sometimes, if you walk around with your eyes open, you see juxtapositions that almost defy description – so I won’t describe; I’ll just post.

These are images from a sidewalk kiosk on a street in downtown San Francisco.
