Glacier Point Geology Hut, Early Morning Light

Early morning light on the Glacier Point Geology Hut, Yosemite National Park, California.

I love photographing at Glacier Point just before and right around sunrise. Despite the challenge of shooting into the bright sky and rising sun to the east, several subjects here can be compelling in the early morning: the first light striking Mt. Hoffman, light beams coming over the Sierra crest, and especially the very first direct light to strike the trees along the ridge at Glacier Point and open to the light from the east. Not only that, but if you go at the right time you have have the whole place nearly or entirely to yourself. I often go there when I visit in autumn and a quiet November morning there is very special.

I had more or less “worked the scene” of the first light hitting Hoffman, North Dome and surrounding peaks before I made this photograph. I basically turned my camera around to point the opposite direction and repositioned the tripod a bit to frame this stone building and include the light on its eastern face.

LeConte Memorial Lodge, Autumn Oak Leaves

Autumn Oak leaves hang in front of the LeConte Memorial Lodge in Yosemite Valley, Yosemite National Park, California.

Historic LeConte Lodge is located near the base of the cliffs along the south side of Yosemite Valley not far from the Housekeeping camp. The lodge was closed when I visited in early November, perhaps for the season, but the oak trees in front of the building were in full autumn color.

San Francisco Buildings, Foot of Market

Forms of large downtown San Francisco buildings near the foot of Market street in morning light.

Near the foot of Market Street, close to the Ferry Building and the Bay, the morning light coming across the water lit these buildings in a special way – something to do, I think, with the low angle of the light, the fact that the fog was just clearing, and the blue sky with thin clouds above. Although the buildings are in direct sun, the light is partially softened and interrupted by the remaining fog clouds over the Bay to the east. When I shot this I had a pretty good idea that it would end up as a black and white photograph.

Buildings and Sky, San Francisco

Tall downtown buildings and sky in morning light, San Francisco, California.

These buildings are near the intersection of Market and the Embarcadero not far from the waterfront in downtown San Francisco. The fog had just cleared back a bit from this area and the first real light of the day was striking the forms of these tall buildings and setting them off against the very blue morning sky.
