Zeum Plaza Circle

Morning photograph of the circular area of the Zeum plaza with a small group of people.

I frequently photograph in downtown San Francisco while on foot, walking various urban streets and ending up wherever my eyes lead me. On this day I had gone to the City on the train and first wandered along the shoreline of the San Francisco Bay, very familiar photographic territory for me. I headed up Market into the downtown area and then began to loop back toward the Caltrain station, stopping in the Moscone Center area along the way. I crossed the pedestrian bridge and ended up on the walkways and plaza surrounding the “Zeum,” and finding interesting light and almost not people stayed a while to photograph the place before continuing on to my train.

Rhyolite Ghost Town Ruins, Dawn

Dawn at the ruins of the ghost town of Rhyolite, Nevada. The remnants of one of the town banks is in the foreground, and the school building is seen in the distance. Beyond is the Amargosa Valley and the Amargosa Range in Death Valley National Park.

This photograph was made during a brief interval when the light went from rather flat and dull to lighter and warm as the sun briefly shone through the high overcast.

Exteriors walls of the ruins of the Rhyolite School. Rhyolite, Nevada. Oddly, the school seems to be one of the better preserved structures in this Nevada ghost town – even the banks have suffered more over the years. Not to suggest that it is in great shape – the roof is gone along with all of the windows and doors – but the walls are still standing for the most part.

At least once a year I join The Nocturnes (the San Francisco Bay Area night photographers’ group led by Tim Baskerville) to photograph the Mare Island Naval Shipyard. This amazing historical site near Vallejo, California was the first US Navy shipyard on the west coast and dates to the mid-1800s. It was active until the late 1990s. It is a night photographer’s paradise with wonderful old buildings ranging form officers’ homes to dry docks to huge cranes to wonderful old brick factory buildings
