Most likely no one noticed, but I have jumped from #4 straight to #6. What happened to #5? It is coming, but I felt like sharing this one first! Like most of the “New England Woods” photographs from our August visit to (mostly) Vermont and (a little bit) Massachusetts, I made this one while walking along the edge of the woods. I recently remarked to an East Coast photographer (while recording for a B&H Explora podcast about photographing fall color) that I was challenged by the density of these woods. Somewhat to my relief, he sympathized and mentioned something that I was starting to discover — it isn’t always easy to find a camera position, and that walking into the forest or along its edge can be a good idea. I made this photograph while walking along a rural Vermont road.

In California it can be hard to find subjects with this much green by the time August arrives. Out here we usually don’t see much rain in the summer months, and our green season is winter. (I often tell people who visit from other places and are surprised by our dry summer landscape, “Come back in winter!”) About the only place here to find such a natural scene full of ferns is in the redwoods, though sometimes I can find small examples near sources of water elsewhere.

For those who aren’t from my part of the American West, it is probably important to state up front that this is “the other Bridgeport,” the one in the dry eastern part of California. The town is located in a broad valley at the base of the Sierra Nevada, more or less northeast of Yosemite National Park. The valley is full of cattle grazing in its extensive pasture lands that somehow escaped the clutches of the historic Los Angeles water rights grabs in the eastern Sierra. In addition to cattle, the places relies a lot on campers, anglers, backpackers and other visitors to the outdoors — though in a more laid-back, old-school manner of places a bit off the beaten track. Oh, it is also known for being (at least in my experience) one of the two or three most expensive places in the state to buy gas for your vehicle.

To those of us who live in far more urbanized areas — for me, that is the San Francisco Bay Area — places like this have a bit of an appealing raw edge, a sense that they are closer to the cycles of the natural world and, to some extent, dominated by them. On a day like this one, when the clouds of a Pacific weather front fill the sky, the town itself seems quite small in relationship to the landscape that surrounds it.

My inclination is to approach photography in locations like the Carrizo Plain as photography of the “natural landscape.” However, the story is a bit more complicated here and, to be honest, in quite a few places in the areas of the American West where I photograph. I’m hard pressed to think of a place I’ve visited where the “hand of man” was not present in some way. In many places this influence is not obvious. For example, in parts of the Sierra backcountry I can entertain the illusion that I’m the only visitor. But in many places around the periphery of these wildernesses and in many other locations it is clear that such an illusion is hard to maintain.

In the Carrizo this is very clear, even though there is plenty of nature to see there. We could start with the obvious fact that access is by roadways that are, even at their worst, pretty decent. More obviously, this is a place where cattle are raised and, no doubt, have been for a long time. I drove out onto the plain at this spot to see vast fields of yellow and purple wildflowers and to find a long view of surrounding mountains. When I arrived I found a pair of the ubiquitous water tanks (this time nearly destroyed), and old windmill, a few other structures, and this barbed wire fencing.

A few years back a group of friends decided to meet at dawn on New Year’s Day. We arrived at a place out in the San Joaquin Valley that is mostly populated by migratory birds this time of year, and we greeted the first sunrise of the new year with friends — a few human friends and a few tens of thousands of geese and other birds. We repeated the event the following year, and it has now become a traditions. Today we can’t think of a better way to start a new year, and once again we assembled there on New Year’s Day 2016.

We arrived to find the place strangely quiet. Typically we expect to hear thousands of birds all around us, but we figured out that they had moved off to nearby ponds. A few of us headed that way and eventually others followed, and we found a decent group of geese settled in on the shallow water. As the sun rose thousands more geese began to fly in, and before long the ponds were filled with them. Inevitably, something causes them to suddenly take to the air and before long that is exactly what happened. The flock noisily took flight, made a few loops over the pond, and then headed north over the rural roadway, silhouetted against sunrise sky.
