The skeletal branches of a dead plant against the pebbles of a desert wash, Death Valley National Park, California.

I came across the skeletal remains of this desert plant while photographing along the east side of Death Valley near the area identified on some maps as the Kit Fox Hills. I had just finished photographing across the floor of the Valley, capturing an area full of sparse desert plants backlit by the very last rays of sun, and the light had diminished after the sun dropped below the tops of the ridges on the west side of the Valley.

I saw this bit of dead plant near the edge of a wash among the rubble of many-colored rocks and pebbles that had, I presume, been washed down from the canyons in the mountains to the east. For a place that seems so colorless from a distance, there is an astonishing variety of color in these rocks. I can see greens, blues, various shades of pink and purple, and some that almost are orange. The branches are just as I found them, and the soft light with just a bit of directionality from the right fills the shadows that would otherwise be very dark.

A small dry wash runs past folded patterns of eroded hills in morning light at Zabriskie Point, Death Valley National Park, California.

This is another in my “up close and personal” sequence of photographs of details of the geology at Zabriskie Point. Zabriskie is undeniably an incredibly beautiful spot, but after photographing “the view” a number of times my attention was drawn to some of the smaller details of the surrounding terrain. While I’ll still shoot the famous view(s) from this location when conditions are special, I now spend more time using a long lens to pick out small elements of the scene – and there are a lot of them to work with!

On this morning the light was, at times, very special. When I made this photograph the typical sidelight from the early sun was diffused and filtered by some high clouds in the east, and this soft light is different than what I’ve seen here before – it seems to me to have a subtle glow.

Linear and curved patterns in morning light at Death Valley Dunes, Death Valley National Park, California.

Early in the morning on the third day of my late March trip to Death Valley I wandered out to Death Valley Dunes near Stovepipe Wells, taking the easier route around the west end of the dunes and then walking toward the higher dunes and shooting more or less towards the rising sun. There are plenty of interesting subjects when approaching the dunes from this direction: the patterned mud (or so they seem) formations beneath the edge of the dunes, the many small plants coming up after recent rains, flowers everywhere, the taller dunes to the east catching the first light, and beyond them the darker peaks of the Amargosa Range.

After climbing to the top of a moderate size dune to get a better and more open view to the east I happened to look down and see this steep, sandy slope with its linear pattern apparently created as sand blew over the edge and down the side. Beyond are the more typical gentle and curving slopes – here with some footprints from the many people who had earlier wandered through this section of the dunes.

(I think that we are seeing more people walking out to the dunes now that the NPS has created a actual “official” parking lot with marked spaces, rest rooms, and interpretive signs – an update from the old practice of simply pulling off the side of the road.)

Woman with coffee cup walks past a wall and behind a fire hydrant and tree, San Francisco, California.

While waiting for a table at a restaurant on a Saturday morning in San Francisco, I grabbed a few photographs of this interesting (to me, anyway!) juxtaposition of yellow wall, tree trunk, fire hydrant, and passing pedestrian from across the street. I first just thought that the light on the plain yellow/tan wall and the white window frames was interesting, and then I thought about how tree trunk and the cluster of leaves framed the central window. As I thought about this and started shooting the woman walked through the frame and, I think, added some balance to the elements in the scene.
