I made this photograph on one of my summertime San Francisco visits on which I head up there on the train very early in the morning, and then I walk wherever my nose leads me, making photographs. On this visit I left the train station and ended up crossing a bridge to the inlet behind AT&T park, sometimes called “McCovey Cove.” From along the far side of this inlet I could see across the San Francisco Bay to the towering cranes at the port of Oakland. They were backed by a fog bank that completely obscured the city of Oakland and all but the very tops of the East Bay Hills.

This morning light coming across the Bay can be very special. As it often shines through the moisture laden air over the water and sometimes through clearing fog, it can take on a luminous glow and can even be almost too bright to look at. This was that sort of morning, so I let the sky exposure go as close to white as I could and still retain some sense of the thick air. The dark object at the left is a concrete breakwater outside the entrance to South Beach Harbor.

At the north end of the Golden Gate Bridge, Conzelman Road leads up into the Marin Headlands along the San Francisco Bay side of the ridge. This road is a favorite place for overlooking the Golden Gate and its famous bridge along with a large expanse of San Francisco and its Bay and points east. In mid-July the road was not accessible from the usual spot near the end of the bridge, so I detoured around towards the “back entrance” via the road to Rodeo Beach. From this road I turned up into the hills and joined Conzelman near its summit. I made a few foggy photographs of the Bay, but my main interest was in trying to find photographs in the old batteries and other abandoned military facilities along the ridge running out toward Point Bonita.

At the summit of the hill, before the road becomes very narrow and many people turn back, is “Battery 129.” There are several tunnels into this facility from alongside the road and a separate route leads up the hill to the old structures on the summit. I took one of the two tunnels under the hill and as I entered the second section I saw this old metal gate against a weathered concrete wall, illuminated by light leaking in from the end of the tunnel.

There are a number of things that make Death Valley National Park, to the best of my knowledge, rather unique. One is the extensive history of human habitation inside the park boundaries, quite a bit of which is visible –  though some takes a bit more effort and attention to spot. The history of mining in the park is well-known, and many of the icons of the park have connections to this history. If you visit Furnace Creek, for example, you cannot miss the displays of old wagons and so forth used to move ore out of the Valley. It doesn’t take a lot of careful study to figure out that many park roads originated in an era of prospecting and mining. There are several well-known examples of structures left over from that era in and around the park, too.

It is largely because of this history that many areas of this national park are (or have been – some are now reverting to wilderness status) accessible by gravel road or four-wheel-drive routes. I would argue that you can’t really get to know this park if you just stick to the paved roads and the points of interest that they access. If you drive any of these other routes and keep your eyes open you will often be surprised by the left overs from relatively recent mining and prospecting, much of which isn’t really written about or described in the usual guides to the park. (And I’m not going to offer specific details about where to find such places here, since I don’t want to be even a little bit responsible for damage to them. If you do visit, treat them with care and respect.)

As I drove along a gravel road in one of the many mountain ranges of the park, returning from a site that is somewhat well-known, I began to notice evidence of fairly recent mining and prospecting. Faint tracks depart from the main “road” and cross valleys and hills, here and there tailing piles and mine entrances are visible, and sometimes you come across old structures such as cabins, storage bunkers, or wooden towers above mine entrances. I spotted the ruins of this old cabin above the road at one point and decided to walk up and investigate.

I’m almost always surprised at how “modern” many of the traces found at these places seem to be. I guess I am expecting something from the 1800s, but quite a few of these places look like they were build and occupied much later than that. I find modern things like linoleum flooring or modern-looking nails or electrical wire in many of them. There obviously isn’t much left of this cabin now, but from the detritus lying around near it and the form and materials found here, it must have been a reasonably comfortable place to live. As I walk around such places I often try to imagine what it must have been like to wake up every morning in this silent desert and head out for another day of physical labor.

Since I haven’t posted photographs of these structures for a while, I’ll share a bit of explanation. The location is the Mare Island Naval Ship Yard, across the water from Vallejo, California. Mare Island is a decommissioned ship yard whose history goes way back into the 1800s, when it was the largest naval ship yard on the west coast. There is a ton of history to the place that I only know vaguely, but it was, among other place, the ship yard where a number of nuclear submarines were produced. (That and certain other dangerous residues are also part of the legacy of the place, unfortunately.) The ship yard has not been active since the 1990s, with the exception of some current work to dismantle a ship from the “ghost fleet” parked near the Carquinez Bridge.

The very old buildings and the remnants of some quite large industrial facilities draw night photographers from around the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. (On my recent visit there were three groups photographing the place, including one from Sacramento.) There are almost endless subjects for night photography, ranging from very old to very new buildings, interesting structures like those in this photograph, old residences, and the general clutter found in any industrial area. All of it is lit by a varied array of lights including just about anything you can imagine: the full moon, light from nearby Vallejo, neon, fluorescent, tungsten, sodium vapor and probably other types of light.

In this photograph, huge overhead structures are lit by garish artificial light, while the overhead clouds are lit by the full moon. If I understand correctly, the structures supported huge cranes on tracks, and were used to move very heavy materials to the waterfront for installation in ships. They haven’t been used in a long time, and they are deteriorating in a way that is fascinating to photographers!
