Pipes at Base of Ship Yard Tower, Night

Night photography of a convoluted assemblage of pipes at the base of a ship yard construction tower at Mare Island Naval Ship Yard, Vallejo, California.

This is a closer view of some of the old and somewhat mysterious industrial equipment and structures at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, California – again shot at night during my visit to this historic location on August 30. This mass of pipes and valves and wires and what not is at the base of one of the tall structures that cross the roadways around the center of the shipyard along Nimitz Avenue.

When I made this exposure I was not sure whether it would end up as black and white or color, but when I saw the intensely yellow color of the light on the painted surfaces of the metal it was, well, too much – so I have gone with the black and white rendition.

Oak Tree, Morning Light (monochrome)

An oak tree along the trail to the top of Mission Peak, Fremont, California.

This photo has been in the queue for longer than I want to admit – all I’ll say is that it is more than a year! This spreading oak is found along a somewhat less-traveled section of trail near Mission Peak in the eastern SF Bay Area, and was photographed in early morning light.

Monterey Cypress, Allan Memorial Grove

Monterey Cypress, Allan Memorial Grove

Beneath the canopy on a foggy afternoon in the Monterey Cypress forest at Allan Memorial Grove, Point Lobos State Reserve, California.

(Since this is simply the black and white version of the photograph I just posted earlier, I’m including largely the same text here that I included with the color rendition.)

I am always intrigued by the patterns of the trunks and lower branches of the Monterey cypress trees when I walk through the Allen Memorial Grove at Point Lobos. I’m also intrigued – and challenged – by the nearly monochromatic nature of the scene, especially when fog mutes the light as it did on this afternoon. On the other hand, the fog also softens and diffuses the light and decreases the contrast between the light parts of the trees and the shadows.

It was in such conditions that I made this photograph in August on a very foggy – and getting foggier! – late afternoon. When I made the exposure I was pretty sure I would make a black and white print from this scene but I also kept open the option of a color version. When I worked up the two versions later I was surprised that to find that I liked the color version more than expected, so I made prints of both the color and black and white versions and lived with them a bit.

In the end I decided that this black and white version works best as a print… I think. (I also have to point out that this photograph relies a lot of the inclusion of a ton of fine detail that just plain isn’t going to be visible in the small jpg version I can post online. Ah, well!)

Fort Mason Buildings, The Golden Gate

Fort Mason Buildings, The Golden Gate

The Golden Gate Bridge stands in the distance beyond the buildings of historic Fort Mason in San Francisco, California.

A few weeks ago I accompanied my wife to Fort Mason, where she was playing in the orchestra for Merola Opera, and I took advantage of the time to spend a few hours wandering around doing photography in the area. Mostly I photographed the old Fort Mason buildings and details of their structure, but I also wandered – along with the throngs of out-of-town tourists – up and over the nearby hill towards the Aquatic Club and the fringes of the Fishermans Wharf area.

At the top of the path over this hill there is a great panorama looking back towards the Golden Gate over the tops of the historic buildings of Fort Mason.
