Coastal Rocks, Surf, and Rain

Coastal rock formations glisten in the rain as an evening squall approaches the Pacific Coast north of Davenport, California. (Black and white version)

Late on a rainy afternoon earlier this week it seemed like the sky might clear enough to make for some spectacular evening shooting along the California coast near Davenport. I headed over the hill to Santa Cruz and started north up the Coast Highway in post-storm clear air with a few puffy clouds offshore. However, as I passed through Davenport I could see a squall line to the northwest, just beginning to move between me and the bright sky to the west. Being either brave or foolish I kept heading north until near Greyhound Rock where the cold rain started. I headed back south, almost to Davenport, before pulling over along a beach where the road descends to near sea level. Although it wasn’t raining here yet, the clouds were clearly heading this way. I grabbed my camera pack and tripod and put on some extra clothes and headed across the beach to the waters edge before turning north toward some low rocks at the end of the beach. Soon it started raining, but at this point I wasn’t about to go home empty-handed so I continued up onto the rocks and managed to make a few exposures in the rain as the squall line approached, the wind picked up, and the rain increased.

‘Tis the Season for California Coastal Photography

While summer is beautiful along the northern and central California coast – at least when everything isn’t fogged in! – my favorite time is the winter season. While I photograph the coast near the San Francisco Bay Area all year long, all too often summer here alternates between heavy coastal fog and (boring!) perfect sunshine.

Winter conditions are far more varied and interesting for photography. If fog is your thing, you get several types of fog here during the winter months. You can encounter the usual ocean fog, though it is not as frequent as during the summer months. But we also have ground-hugging tule fog, which is caused by relatively warm moisture on the ground (often following rainfall) forming low fog during cool conditions. While this is more common inland, it can affect areas near the coast as well. One of my favorite fog effects is one I’ve only seen during the winter; it is caused when huge pacific waves break on the coast in just the right conditions, forming a low lying mist right near the shoreline and sometimes paired with brilliantly sunny skies overhead.

The ocean itself is also more compelling during the winter. When the northern Pacific Ocean becomes stormy – even when the storms are a long way off – huge swells roll into the California coastline. (It is for this reason that the famous Mavericks surf contest is held in winter off the coast below San Francisco.) These waves are often 20 feet tall and sometimes much higher. Combine them with some very spectular coastline (I’ll mention a few places below) and stunning photography is possible.

In addition, as Pacific weather fronts come through, and especially as they pass inland and begin to clear, really wonderful cloud conditions occur along the coast. If you want to go for the obvious, pick a day of high surf as a Pacific front is clearing late in the day and – go for it! – shoot at sunset.

I’m fortunate to live a bit more than an hour from the Monterey Peninsula, so I head down that way if it looks like I’ll have good conditions on a give day. Point Lobos – where I photographed last weekend during high surf – is a common destination, but I’ll head south a bit further into the upper Big Sur area if I have time. Even closer, the coastline between Santa Cruz and Half Moon Bay provides outstanding, though sometimes less obvious, locations. Heading north, there are many options, but the Point Reyes area is often best photographed this time of year.

If you follow this blog, you know that I was at Point Lobos last week – I’ve posted several photographs from that visit already and there are a few more in the pipeline.

Yosemite Falls, Autumn Rain

Yosemite Falls and Valley meadow and forest in an autumn rain storm.

Another photograph from my rainy early-November weekend in Yosemite Valley. On Saturday the storm was coming in and as the day wore on the rain increased. As I photographed the nearly leafless trees in the meadows in sight of Yosemite Falls, the rain increased to the point that the Falls were almost completely obscured, although the rain also created a wonderful misty atmosphere and muted the fall colors.

A note about shooting in the rain… I foolishly removed my umbrella from my bag before I left on this trip. What was I thinking?! A good umbrella may be almost your most important piece of photographic equipment when shooting in conditions like these. Instead I ended up using an alternative set of strategies. (I did try to find an umbrella at the Yosemite Village store… but I couldn’t bring myself to buy a souvenir umbrella with big bear footprints all over it. :-) I have a nice Goretex rain hat that almost exactly covers my 5D and my lenses, so the main plan was to get everything set up and ready to shoot and then put the hat on top. While the tripod got wet the camera stayed reasonably dry – well, OK, not too wet. A little moisture on the outside of the camera body doesn’t concern me too much, though these conditions were such that I had to be pretty careful and use a towel on the camera and lens every time I returned to the car.

Autumn Snow Squall, North Lake and Piute Crags

This photo marks – knock on wood! – the return to more a regular schedule of posting new photographs.

As always, there is a bit of a story behind the photograph. Last weekend (the first October weekend of 2008) I managed to do one of my annual aspen chasing expeditions, timed to catch the trees as they change from green to golden, yellow, red, orange, and a thousand intermediate hues. I left the Bay Area on Friday afternoon and drove over Tioga Pass, stopping there for a moment to feel the force of the first incoming Pacific storm of the season. After dropping down from the pass and stopping for dinner at Whoa Nellie Deli I continued on to Bishop, where I checked into a motel at 9:30.

I wasn’t certain what the next morning would bring since the weather report called for the passage of the weather front and then some showery weather and dropping snow levels. When I left Bishop well before dawn the stars were out, so I was optimistic. As I drove west and up into the Bishop Creek drainage, however, the clouds increased, and by the time I arrived at North Lake before 7:00 a.m. it had clouded up completely. No problem, I thought, the air is still and I like shooting in overcast conditions, especially with the saturated colors of the aspens. I got out of the car, put my camera on the tripod, grabbed the rest of my gear, and started towards a spot with a good shot. Within moments the wind whipped up and it began to rain, very quickly turning to wet snow. I was quickly back in the car, hoping to wait it out and see what developed.

Before long there were breaks in the clouds, and although the cold wind was blowing like crazy and there was still some intermittent precipitation, I decided that the conditions were special enough that I’d better get out there and start shooting. (While I can imagine more comfortable conditions for photography, sometimes the most interesting conditions are not comfortable.)

Eventually I made a fairly extensive set of photographs from various areas along the shoreline of North Lake. This one was made near the outlet of the lake, looking back across the nearby grassy shoreline, and past wildly colored aspen trees to the more distant Piute Crags, where a snow squall was partly obscuring the summit.
